When Ophelia opened her eyes and saw that the bed was empty, she sat up and put her hand on her loudly churning stomach. She should’ve had dinner… But didn’t Nikolai say he was going to bring dinner? She pursed her lips and squinted her eyes in discomfort. 1

She took a glance around, but neither Nikolai nor Pain were to be found. She sighed and got out of bed, but as she was about to walk to the bathing room, a quiet knock on the door echoed through the room, and she halted.

It couldn’t be Nikolai or Rhaziel; they never knock. Ophelia approached the door with trepidation. She opened the door and bit her lower lip as she saw Sasha Novikov standing right in front of her, carrying a neatly

folded black dress.

“What are you doing here?” Ophelia questioned, raising her brow.

“This is my castle, too,” Sasha remarked as she slipped the clothing into Ophelia’s hands. “Hurry up and get dressed.”

“Where is Nikolai?” Ophelia asked, grasping her dress tightly.

“Receiving punishment for his impulsive acts of last night,” Sasha

whispered, crossing her arms on her chest and shaking her head in despair.

The kiss immediately came to Ophelia’s mind. ‘It is impossible…! She then

dismissed it.

“And what brings you here?” Ophelia asked, completely expressing her distaste towards Sasha.

Sasha smiled. The dragoness was really… something. “If you are actually

Nikolai’s mate, I must treat you fairly. In addition, he threatened to have me act as a…” She paused and let out a long sigh of aggravation.

“Maid?” Ophelia asked with a smirk.

Sasha snorted. “Friend.”

Ophelia lost her smirk. “Bullshit.” She snarled and walked into the room and into the bathing room.

Sasha suppressed a smile. Sasha was technically invited in because

Ophelia didn’t bother to shut the door, but instead of going in, she relaxed her back against the wall and closed the door.

She shut her eyes and lost herself in thought. Despite his actions, Nikolai was bringing her into his life because he had some faith in her. Faith in her ability to look for his mate, who was clearly in danger. The Novikovs would never permit their blood to be contaminated, even if Ophelia was indeed Nikolai’s mate. Any kind of hybrid would not be tolerated.

Sasha’s mother, Anastasia, was a witch, but her brothers were pure bloods like her father, and even though she still had pure blood in her veins, she inherited her mother’s abilities. Despite everything, she was aware that she wasn’t entirely accepted into the family.

Sasha had some knowledge of Nikolai and Ophelia’s fate. An awful outcome that could only be prevented if they were fully pulled apart and separated from one another, but that was going to be challenging. It was absolutely horrible to separate a lycan from their mate, and a lycan like Nikolai… Sasha sighed heavily, closing her eyes.

After several minutes, she eventually heard footsteps and backed aside from the door, which abruptly opened to unveil Ophelia, who was stunning in a black royal gown with sleek, downswept black brown hair. She appeared to be the royal she was. It suited her and Sasha couldn’t help but smile.

“Remember how I praised your beauty in the dining room that day?” She

had to ask.

Ophelia arched her eyebrows. “Yes?”

“I was being truthful,” Ophelia nodded gently in response to Sasha’s whisper.

“Thank you.”

“How about we go through a brief training now?” Sasha enquired while beaming. “Just us girls,”

Ophelia smiled hesitantly feeling apprehensive…Or shy? She had never interacted normally with someone of her gender. She didn’t have a sister, and Vera, her cousin, didn’t have a particularly amicable connection with

her.

Ophelia nodded slowly. “Okay,” she said, ignoring her stomach’s hunger.

In a big, gloomy room with fire torches at every turn, Nikolai was standing unconcernedly with his hands in his coat pockets.

Elders were seated in an organized arrangement in front of them, and a large warrior with a stern countenance was standing behind him. Nine elders and nine chairs.

Nikolai mumbled, blowing air into his mouth leisurely, “It has been a while.”

“How much has it been?” He suddenly asked, widening his eyes, which were twisting with wrath.

“Oh…” His eyes suddenly reduced then he chuckled. “Three hundred years.” He whispered, clicking his tongue.

The elders all wore stern expressions. They maintained their unyielding position with an atmosphere that was nothing but discipline.

“Nevertheless, you haven’t changed.” The oldest of the elders, Anton, spoke forward and shook his head in total dismay. “If you must know, we were all in attendance for the tournament and witnessed all of your antics, including your obsession with the dragoness, with whom we have learned that you are enamored.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?” Nikolai asked, with his seemingly innocent eyes enlarging into a question and his lips curving into a sly smirk.

“And last night, we learned that the guards who had been sent by Devin to hold her down were discovered dead.” Anton kept talking while displaying a dejected look.

“And you’re holding that against me?” Nikolai placed his hand on his chest and asked with a theatrical gasp.

The elders in attendance, including Anton, scowl at him as he smiled brightly like he was in a circus act.

“Their chests lacked hearts, their bodies lacked arms, and their heads were horribly crushed!” Igor, another elder, shouted angrily.
