The Lycan's Forbidden Mate novel Chapter 89

89 Tears?

39 Tears?

Sliding her fingers over the books, Ophelia was able to do nothing but los herself in thought as she moved slowly between the enormous shelves. He need to understand Danil’s words’ meaning and the relationship between both of their kinds was only reasonable.

She sighed and pursed her lips, realizing Nikolai was keeping alot. Does this imply that she was clueless?

She suddenly stopped, pulled out a book from the shelf, and turned to face Yulia who was trailing behind her.

“Do you believe I’m clueless?” She questioned, squeezing the book firmly.

“If you stop to think about it, we both are,” Yulia gently nodded in response. “However, you shouldn’t worry too much. Nikolai is only keeping things from you because he wants to keep you safe.”

Ophelia raised an eyebrow in surprise at her assertion. She recalled having breakfast with the Novikovs. Particularly Yulia emphasized her distaste over

her presence.

“You really believe that?” Ophelia questioned, firmly grasping the book.

Yulia gave a nod. “Boris claims that they are keeping information about our family from me out of concern for me. Although I am interested and no longer a little child, I can appreciate where he is coming from.” then she sighed. “He doesn’t know that it’s preferable to tell me the details so I can protect myself.”

Ophelia feigned a smile. “You Novikovs care about each other in a peculiar way.”

Yulia’s eyes went wide. “Are you talking about Nikolai? He doesn’t give a damn about any of us; he might give a little thought to me, but not to the

others.”

89 Tears?

“Do you know what he did to earn this hatred?” A little taken aback by her statements, Ophelia questioned.

Yulia parted her lips hesitantly then took a step back. “He… He killed my mother.”

Ophelia’s eyes widened. “What? Why?”

Yulia forced a smile. “I wish I knew. No one does.”

“What?” Ophelia was stunned. More than stunned. This revelation was something that she had not expected… Nikolai had actually killed a Noviko “Does this mean you have no knowledge of my mother’s blood pearl?” Yulia suddenly asked.

“A blood pearl?” Ophelia questioned slowly and bewildered.

“Oh.” Yulia gave a nod. “Nevermind.”

“Yulia!” The library was suddenly deluged with Boris’ voice.

Turning toward the source of the sound, Ophelia and Yulia caught sight of a furious Boris. He took somewhat hurried, angry steps in their direction, and seized Yulia’s wrist. She whimpered, making it clear that his touch hurt.

“Talking to the dragoness?!” She winced and tried to escape his hold as he yelled at her.

“I.. you’re hurting me, brother.”

Ophelia noticed this but just as she parted her lips, she felt a dark presence looming behind her and clamped her lips shut.

Ophelia could only watch as Boris pulled Yulia away without saying a word despite her protests. He gave her not a single look. Was he humiliated? She hadn’t even approached him yet.

89 Tears?

“How much longer will you keep me in the dark?” She questioned softly before turning to face Nikolai, who seized the book from her grasp in an instant.

“I assume Yulia told you about how I killed her mother,” He looked through the book carefully and mumbled in an entirely unbothered manner.

The absence of remorse in his eyes astounded Ophelia. “Why did you kill her?”

“Why is this significant?” Nikolai asked without giving her a glance. “You inquire as though you have never killed someone.”

Ophelia scowled. “When it’s family, it’s different.”

“I know, right?” Nikolai laughed lightly, as though she had cracked a joke.

Ophelia felt perplexed. Why did he…?

“Did she harm you in any way?” Ophelia questioned, emphasizing her inquiry. Could she possibly draw comparisons between Tiana Novikov and her beloved uncle Esteban?

“Yes.” Nikolai replied and pointed the book in her direction. The front cover of the thick, dark book had a carving of a golden wolf howling to the moon. “Where did you find this?”

As she closely examined the symbol, in her mind’s eye, she saw a young child, who appeared to be around ten years old, sitting in a corner of an abandoned dungeon. His olive green eyes, which were sparkling with tears, were almost hidden by his long, shaggy, disheveled hair. He appeared underweight, severely weak, and fifth.

The image vanished. Her heart pounded

voice trembling slightly.

Noticing her frail composure, Nikolai threw the book to the ground and hurriedly cupped her face. His expression softened, and his scorching crimson eyes glowed with worry. Why was she suddenly uneasy? Did someone threaten her? Had she seen something?

“Are you hurt?”

His unexpected action and words startled Ophelia. She gave him a quick blink, then fixed her gaze on him.

“Are you hurt?” As he repeated his question, her eyes grew wide. He gave of the impression that he would kill if she replied “yes.”

She inhaled. Her chest thumped violently. Her lips trembled and then she smiled shakily. Why did that brief glimpse affect her so much? Was that Nikolai? What was going on with her? She was seeing a young Nikolai for the second time.

“Ophelia!” Nikolai called in panic.

Ophelia blinked once more as if trying to collect herself. “I’m alright.” She breathed.

It was forceful and Nikolai’s eyes widened even more. It was almost as if he could read everything she was feeling in her eyes. He gave her a longing glance as his fingers stroked her cheeks.

“You look terrified, Ophelia.” He whispered those words so strongly.

Ophelia raised a brow. “What?”
