Stepping inside, she finds the accommodations are actually slightly better than she expected. The 'best room' is essentially just a standard double, but it has a cozy, functional charm to it. Most importantly, the sheets look clean enough to sleep on.
After splashing some water on her face to wash away the grime of the fight, Tara collapses onto the mattress. She pulls out her phone, frustrated to find the cellular service is practically non-existent. Videos refuse to load, spinning endlessly on the screen, though text messages manage to push through occasionally.
Opening her messages, she finds a string of frantic texts from Danny.
[Where are you?]
[Your phone goes straight to voicemail.]
[Text me back the second you see this.]
The urgency in his words makes it clear he knows exactly what went down. Luke must have filled him in on the ambush.
Tara quickly types back, 'I'm perfectly fine, don't worry,' and is about to send a follow-up when a rhythmic, violent squeaking suddenly erupts through the wall.
It is unmistakably the sound of a violently rocking bed, followed immediately by breathless, explicit moans.
"Oh god, take it easy," a woman's voice whines loudly. "That hurts."
"I can't help it, babe," a man grunts back. "You look too damn good. I can't control myself."
"You're so much better than my husband!"
"I know that. Where exactly in the village?"
Danny had already been tearing down the highway toward her the second he received Luke's frantic alert. But the decaying mountain roads and atrocious cell service are making it nearly impossible to pinpoint her exact GPS coordinates.
"I'm at—"
Before Tara can finish her sentence, the couple next door apparently hits their second wind. A chorus of wild, exaggerated moans and violent headboard-banging floods the airwaves, easily loud enough to be picked up by her phone's microphone.
If Tara wasn't fully mortified before, she certainly is now. A hot blush instantly torches her cheeks, burning all the way to the tips of her ears as she sits frozen on the phone with Danny.
