Tara always takes excellent care of her health, sticking to a strict wellness routine. Lately, however, a heavy blanket of fatigue and lethargy settles over her. She assumes it is just the byproduct of pouring all her energy into botanical medicine research while Danny is away on a business trip.
"I'm just a little tired," she says, offering a warm, reassuring smile to the family gathered around the dinner table. She picks up her fork, stabbing a piece of fresh sea bass that Danny has just carefully deboned for her, and takes a bite.
Without warning, the scent of the fish hits the back of her throat, sending a violent wave of nausea through her. She gags, covering her mouth. It makes no sense—the fish is perfectly fresh, a dish she usually loves. But suddenly, her senses are overwhelmingly hyperactive. A quick glance at a plate of glazed ribs triggers another uncontrollable heave.
"What's wrong? Darling, what is it? Food poisoning?" Danny's face instantly drains of color. He hovers over her, completely terrified by her sudden illness.
"Tara, honey... are you pregnant?"
"Yes, is that it?"
"It has to be! That's exactly how it starts. When I was pregnant with my son, the mere smell of fish made me sick to my stomach."
The mothers in the room—Deanna, Katie, Kellen, and Marilyn—exchange knowing glances. They've all been through it and spot the telltale signs immediately. Even the two grandmothers, Catherine and Eleanor, light up with sudden realization.
Pregnant?
Tara freezes, the thought genuinely having never crossed her mind. She quickly presses her fingers against her own wrist, checking her pulse. The steady, powerful rhythm beneath her fingertips confirms it. Her expression shifts into one of stunned disbelief.
