"Robin’s awake," Elise said, hanging up the phone and turning to Alexander. "I’m heading back up to see him."
"Do you need me to come with you?"
"No," Elise said, standing up. "Dylan is entirely unreasonable. It’s better if you just wait for me here."
Alexander didn’t push the matter. "Alright. Call me if you need anything."
"Will do."
Stepping out of the elevator, Elise caught sight of Fleur from a distance, standing outside the ward where James was firmly blocking her path.
Elise walked over slowly.
Spotting her, Fleur glared with eyes red from crying, her gaze dripping with venom.
James offered a respectful bow to Elise. "Madam, Mr. Bennett and Dr. Sanders are both inside. You may go right in."
Elise gave him a faint nod and moved past Fleur toward the door.
Without warning, Fleur lunged out and grabbed her wrist. "Elise, you must have manipulated Robin! You vicious, bitter woman—you have a baby of your own, so why are you trying to steal my child?!"
Elise paused, turning her head to shoot Fleur an icy look. A cold sneer touched her lips. "Fleur, is Robin really your son?"
Fleur froze. A flicker of panic flashed across her eyes, but she quickly stiffened her neck and spat back defensively, "I carried Robin for nine months! He is my son! Don’t you dare try to steal him from me!!"
Elise forcefully yanked her wrist free. "I said before that Robin may be small, but he isn’t stupid. That clearly struck a nerve, didn’t it? So you threw a dramatic tantrum about taking him away, fully aware that his fragile state couldn’t take the slightest bit of distress. Yet you didn’t hold back for a second. You claim he’s your child, Fleur, but it seems like you can’t wait for him to be driven completely out of his mind."
"Nonsense!" Fleur snarled under her breath. "You were the one who abused Robin behind our backs while Dylan and I weren’t looking! You’re the one who can’t stand the sight of us—"
"Save the performance for Dylan," Elise cut her off, having zero patience left for her theatrics. She turned on her heel and walked straight into the ward.
"Elise—"
Fleur tried to push past, but James moved with practiced speed, shutting the door right in her face.
"Eldest Madam, Mr. Bennett has made it clear that you don’t need to concern yourself with the young master. Please return to your room."
"I am Robin’s birth mother! Why does Elise get to go in while I’m kept out?!"
"My apologies," James said, his face completely expressionless. "I am simply following orders. Please do not make things difficult for me, eldest Madam."
Seeing no way around him, Fleur still refused to leave. Gritting her teeth in secret, she turned and took a seat on the bench nearby.
Inside, the ward was dead quiet.
Dylan stood by the window. Hearing the door open, he turned slightly to look toward the entrance.
Elise didn’t even glance his way. The moment she stepped inside, her eyes locked onto Robin.
The little boy was sitting up in the hospital bed with a pen in hand, his head bowed as he focused intently on drawing. Jessica sat beside the bed, turning to press a finger to her lips in a gentle hush gesture.
Elise stopped in her tracks.
Robin hadn’t noticed that anyone else had entered the room. He scribbled away on the paper, completely absorbed in his work.
Elise softened her footsteps and drew closer, finally getting a clear look at what he was drawing. It was a large ship cruising across an open ocean.
Robin set down his pen and looked up at Jessica.
Jessica stroked his hair gently. "All finished, Robin?"
The boy gave a sweet, obedient nod.
"May I take a look?"
"Okay."
Jessica picked up the drawing and examined it closely. This was her signature therapeutic approach—evaluating a patient’s true psychological state through the process and output of their artwork.
She studied it intently, refusing to miss a single detail. After a moment, she set the drawing down and pointed to a tiny figure drawn on the ship. "Why is this little person colored red, Robin?"
Hearing the question, Robin pressed his lips together, his small fingers nervously twisting the fabric of his hospital gown.
Jessica kept her voice soft and encouraging. "It’s alright, Robin. You can say whatever is on your mind."
Hearing those words, Elise’s heart melted completely.
Jessica looked up at her. "Would you like to come over and talk to him?"
Elise wanted nothing more, but remembering his terrified breakdown from earlier that morning, she worried about startling him. "Is it okay for me to go over?"
"It’s perfectly fine," Jessica reassured her. "Deep down, he still trusts you and relies on you."
Relieved, Elise stepped closer to the bed.
Jessica spoke softly to the boy. "Robin, why don’t you show your drawing to your Godmother?"
Robin didn’t dare lift his head, but he carefully used his little hands to push the drawing toward Elise.
Seeing this, Jessica stood up to give her space. "Sit here, Miss Harper."
Elise nodded and sat down at the edge of the bed.
Robin’s eyelashes fluttered nervously, his head dipping even lower.
Elise looked at him, her voice melting with sweetness. "Robin, your drawing is so beautiful."
Being praised made the boy shy.
Elise smiled softly. "Godmother loves drawing too. Will you lift your head up so Godmother can draw a picture of you?"
After a few seconds of hesitation, Robin slowly raised his head to look at her.
Elise offered him a warm, tender smile. "May I borrow one of your pens?"
Robin immediately handed one over.
Elise took it. "Thank you, Robin."
A soft flush bloomed across the boy’s pale little face out of shyness.
Elise lowered her head, gripping the pen as she began sketching effortlessly on a fresh sheet of paper...
