Chapter 197: Chapter 197

"It’s Dylan Bennett!"

An accomplice shouted, "Boss, he brought a whole squad with him! Our men outside are pinned down!! Law enforcement is probably going to be here any minute—should we retreat?!"

"Damn it!! How the hell did he know where we were if he didn’t even answer the phone?!"

Suddenly, as if realizing something, the brown-eyed man turned his head sharply toward Elise.

"You’re wearing a tracking device?" He swept a quick glance over the shattered remnants of her phone on the ground. "Ha! No wonder you weren’t afraid at all—you had a trick up your sleeve!"

Hearing this, Elise was hit with a sudden wave of realization.

So Dylan had planted a tracking device on her phone...

That meant he hadn’t answered her calls because he was deliberately stalling for time...

While everyone thought they couldn’t get through to him, Dylan was already en route to the warehouse with backup.

At that moment, tears burst from Elise’s eyes.

She looked toward Dylan sitting inside the black Maybach, frantically blinking away her tears, but her vision remained so blurred that she couldn’t see his face clearly no matter how hard she tried.

Outside, the sounds of a violent clash between the two groups echoed through the air.

The brown-eyed man drew a gun, pressing the dark, cold muzzle directly against Elise’s temple, and roared at Dylan,

"Bennett, I really underestimated you! To think you’d even use your own wife and unborn children as leverage! Fine! Since you want to play dirty, I’ll indulge you! Even if I don’t get what I came for today, taking the lives of your wife and kids will be more than enough to report back!!"

The car door swung open, and Dylan stepped out.

"I brought what you want!" Dylan held up a flash drive, his voice remarkably steady. "Don’t hurt her. She knows nothing. Everything you need is on this flash drive. I’ll give it to you, but you must release my wife first!"

"Bullshit!!" the brown-eyed man roared. "You brought a squad to surround us, and you think I’m stupid?!"

"I couldn’t possibly come entirely alone. My wife is pregnant and needs medical attention. I came to swap myself and this drive for her. Release my wife, and I will be your hostage to help you cross the border!"

Dylan’s voice was firm and resolute. As he spoke, he raised both hands high in the air, advancing step by step toward Elise’s position—

BANG!

A gunshot rang out, the bullet ricocheting off the concrete right near Dylan’s feet.

The gun that had been pressed against Elise’s temple was now pointed straight at the space between Dylan’s brows. The brown-eyed man roared, "Freeze! Take one more step and see if I don’t blow her brains out!"

Dylan halted. His dark eyes darted over Elise for a fraction of a second before he turned his gaze back to the brown-eyed man and continued, "This flash drive is protected by a special encryption algorithm. Without me personally unlocking it, it’s completely useless to you! Your best option is to let her go—I’ll take the drive and go with you!"

The brown-eyed man knit his brows, clearly hesitating.

Their mission here was to secure the data in Dylan’s hands. Orders from the top were strict: returning empty-handed meant death anyway.

Just as he hesitated, an accomplice burst in from outside, clutching a blood-soaked arm and shouting frantically, "Boss, we fell into a trap! An armed squad was spotted advancing on us from the front!!"

Hearing this, the brown-eyed man’s face twisted in shock.

"Bennett, you fucking played me—"

Almost at the exact same instant, Dylan lunged forward violently at the brown-eyed man.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Three wild shots were fired into the air.

Elise watched in horror as Dylan wrestled with the brown-eyed man, her tears pouring uncontrollably.

The searing pain in her abdomen grew exponentially worse. Her face turned deathly pale as she gasped for air, but with her hands and feet tightly bound, she couldn’t move at all.

She knew she was likely going into premature labor.

Help had already arrived. She just needed to hold on a little longer... just a little bit longer...

BANG!

Suddenly another gunshot echoed through the room—one of the kidnappers had ambushed Dylan from behind.

Hit in the leg, Dylan’s tall frame froze instantly. Taking advantage of the moment, the brown-eyed man slammed a heavy fist into his face, followed by a vicious kick straight into his stomach.

With a muffled groan, Dylan’s large frame flew backward, crashing violently onto the hard floor!

He coughed up a mouthful of blood.

"Damn it! Cripple him, but don’t kill him! We haven’t gotten the drive yet—he still needs to be alive!" With those words from the brown-eyed man, his accomplice rushed forward, lifting a baseball bat and bringing it down ruthlessly onto Dylan.

"Dylan!!!"

Blood trickled down Dylan’s forehead, yet his eyes remained fixed on Elise without flinching.

His blood-stained lips moved faintly. "Elise... I’m sorry... for dragging you into this... Stay strong... they’ll... be here soon..."

Mid-sentence, his gaze suddenly sharpened.

As the baseball bat swung down a second time, Dylan suddenly reached up and caught it in his grip. Before the kidnapper could react, he executed a swift leg sweep, tripping the man to the ground. Snatching the baseball bat, he slammed it down hard onto the kidnapper’s head—

Blood spattered everywhere as the accomplice lay motionless on the ground, his head bleeding profusely.

Seeing this, the brown-eyed man cursed, lunged forward, and delivered a heavy kick to Dylan’s shoulder.

"Dylan—"

CLANG!

The baseball bat dropped to the floor as Dylan collapsed, coughing up several more mouthfuls of blood...
