A Kiss at Midnight (Delilah and Caelum) novel Chapter 32

Chapter 32

The second the bell rang, I was up and ready to get out of my seat.

Done

Completely and honestly done with the bullshit called school, and needed something to refresh my brain.

Shoving my books into my bag, I headed straight to the door once I was done, trailing after the rest of the crowd, already planning exactly how fast I could get off the school ground before someone pisses me off.

And it’s not like I could carrying on skipping classes the way I used to, I couldn’t afford to do so, because apparantely me showing some fucked up form of dedication to save my my rapidly declining grades actually also meant attending every lessons now,

Tragic

Absolutely tragic

Shaking the thought off my head, I was just about walking through the classroom door when a voice stopped me.

“Miss Quinn.” My steps halts and my eyes twitches.

Jesus Christ.

Talk about tasting the waters. At their point, I was really hanging onto the thread of restraint I had left today.

Slowly, I turned around, and a smile stretches across my lips, one that was very much fake, and probably should have come with a label warning.

Mrs Hughes on the other hand, sat behind her desk, unaffected by the fact that she was currently ruining my afternoon.

I raised a brow. “To what do I owe this humble withholding of my freedom, Mrs Hughes?” My tone coming out sweet but a completely contrast to my mood.

She ignores every word that came out of my mouth and instead says. “Sit.” My brow rises even higher as I stared at her for a second and she stares back.

“Right.” With a sigh, I make my way back toward her desk, before dropping on an empty chair opposite from her, folding my arms across my chest, before giving her a look that says ‘can we get this over and done with.” “Yeah?”

Mrs Hughes adjusted her glasses. “First of all, Delilah, I’ve noticed the efforts you have been putting in recently.”

Okay..I see this was a compliment or something

Um. Who would have thought.

She carries on before I could say anything. “Your attendance has improved greatly, and you have also been turning in more assignment.”

“Try not to sound too excited.” I said, giving her a small shrug, and she once again ignore that.

It’s amazing how people in her prefession has the talent for that.

“I also heard you’ve been getting tutored by Mr Hart.” Acient history. Next. But instead she smiles at this. “This is wonderful to be honest. Caelum is probably the best person you could be learning from. He’s hardworking, responsible, patient…”

Yeah, Caelum might be tolerable to me now, with how far we have come, but God, get me out of here.

Chapter 32

I wasn’t about to be called back right after the final bell, just to sit through a fan club meeting.

“And academically he’s one of the strongest student in the entire school.”

Cool, fantastic, amazing, but can we get to the point now. I’ve got thing to do, and sitting here wasn’t helping since it feels like my soul was actively leaving my body.

Mrs Hughes finally stops praising him long enough to look at me. “Since you have been receiving tutoring for a while now, T wanted to let you know that there would be a test at the end of the school week.”

I stared boredly at her. “Sure.”

Her smile still remains, and honestly this was by far the longest I have seen her smile. “We can see how much progress you’ve made through the text. So I hope you prepare for it, and don’t let us down.”

Nodding slowly, I waited for her to continue but she doesn’t say anything else. “Was that all?” I asked as gently as I could and she nods.

Thank fuck

Immediately I get up from my seat. “Right, great talk,” and with that I make my way out of the classroom, not sparring her another glance before she could till of anything else to say.

The second I stepped into the hallway, I reached for my phone, sending a text to Kaia asking where she was. And her response comes almost instantly, with her letting me she was rounding up a chemistry project and would be out in a minute.

Another text followed from her, suggesting we meet at the entrance of the school, and I had just sent an an okie dokie text when a hand suddenly wrapped themselves around my shoulders.

And let’s just say I nearly elbowed whoever it was before turning towards them, only to find Jace beside me, and I let out a sigh.

“What do you want,” I asked genuinely wondering what his sudden interest in me was.

Yeah, we might have been friends when we were small, but that ship sailed off a long time ago. And yeah, we did have a little bit heart to heart moment. But that was about it.

I had expected everything to return back to the way it was, him being a bit of a douchbag and me ignoring his entire existence.

But again, there seems to be a change in his behavior lately.

I raised a brow at him, watching him place a hand over his chest. “Ouch.” He mutters, feigning being hurt, getting an eye roll from me. “I saw someone walking around looking pissed at the entire world,” he carries on, “and thought to myself, how about I come brighten up her day by adding to her already depleting mood.”

“Aww.” I fake a smile, looking up at him. “Aren’t you the brightest of them all.”

His hand remained on his chest. “Only you gets me, Quinn.”

“Mmh.”

He grins, his gaze sweeping through my face for a second. “But seriously though, what’s got you looking like you’re plotting a murder.”

I was about brushing him off with a sarcastic comment when a movement from down the hallway, catches my attention. My gaze hardened in an instant as I watched Sophie make her way to the entrance of the school, looking like a fucking lost puppy.

“I’m trying to think of a way to get back at a certain bitch who thinks she is something more than what she actually is.” his grin immediately disappears, and I smiled sweetly, my gaze returning to him, “Any ideas?”

Jace raises both hands. “Oh no.”

I laughed. “Why? Chickening out before it begins.”

“Nope.” he shakes his head. “I know exactly who the certain bitch is and I want absolutely no involvement in whatever drama you have cooking up.”

“Traitor.”

“Its self preservation.” I scoffed at this as he points at himself. “As much as I would love to help because I love and adore you in my heart, I just happen to value my peace.”

I flipped him off instantly, without any form of hesitation and he smiles instead, giving me heart signs with his fingers.

“I love you too,” he then pinches my cheek, not hard but not gently either, “you are adorable.”

“I’m going to break your fingers,” I say, slapping his hand away.

“You say the sweetest things ever,” I huffed and he lets out a laugh instead before checking the time on his phone, “damn, I’ve got to go.”

“Then go.”

He gives me a mock salute. “See you later, menace.” He chuckled before walking away, and three steps later, he stops, turning over to look at me again.

Only this time the grin on his face was gone. “I know you’re probably thinking a lot of crazy things to do.” I raised a brow at him, “but don’t overdo it, Delilah,” his expression remained serious, “don’t do something that will hurt you or put you in some kind of trouble.”

I rolled my eyes, scoffing, though I could see it. The concern, real concern and knew he wasn’t joking or teasing. He genuinely meant it.

A smirk tugged at mg lips. “I make no promises, Moreno,” he narrows his gaze at me as I continued, “but if I do end up committing a crime, you’ll bail me out, right?”

A smirks appears on his face. “Depends.”

“On?”

“Whether it’s worth the crime or not,” I snorted and he laughs before finally turning, disappearing down the hallway as I shake my head at him.

Idiot

The hallway was nearly empty by now with only a few student that remained scattering around, followed by faint conversations blowing with the slamming of a locker.

I adjusted my bag on my shoulder, ready to make it out of the hellhole when something catches my attention. Or rather,

someone.

Surprises every one… Sophie fucking Delgado

Again

My steps slowed as I watched her stand at the entrance of the hallway, looking like she was debating whether to or not to

leave. Nervous, hesitant, and almost uncomfortable

At least she was not clinging onto Landon like her life depended on it, which was a sight slightly worth to behold.

But whatever slightly pleased feeling I had at the thought was instantly gone when my eyes drops straight to her wrist. spotting the sliver chain that was wrapped around it.

The braclet he had gotten for her

And my mood soured even more, my jaw tightened, and for a moment, I simply stared at it. Then my gaze drifted down to my own wrist, staring down at the matching silver chain that sat against my skin.

The one I had bought immediately after they had left the store, the other day at the mall.

My jaw tightened even more, just for a slow smile to spread across my face as an idea forms in my head.

Well, well, well

Would you look at that

Maybe this was being petty, immature, and being absolutely unnecessary.

Which meant I loved it

My smile widens as I make my way over toward her, and Sophie doesn’t notice me,, and was too busy staring at the floor.
