Grant's eyes welled with tears. "Why do you have to leave to get him? Can't we just put Lily in the transport and go with you? It's going to waste so much precious time making a round trip! She's critical, Lucius. Every second counts."
Grant clasped his hands in desperate pleading. "I haven't asked you for anything in all these years. But please, I am begging you—take Liliana straight to his facility so he can operate the second we arrive."
Lucius genuinely wanted to expedite Liliana's treatment.
But he also didn't want to trigger an absolute meltdown from Madeline.
Madeline was currently drowning in depression. Since the paralysis, she barely spoke a word, clinging to the singular hope of this specific surgery.
If Lucius waltzed into the clinic with Liliana in tow and commanded the surgeon to prioritize his mistress, he couldn't even begin to fathom the psychological blow it would deal to Madeline.
So he rejected the idea firmly. "That's not going to work."
Grant blinked away tears. "Why, Lucius? You have the resources. Why can't we just take her to him? We could get her prepped for surgery the second we land."
Lucius weighed his words carefully before answering, "It's simple. Liliana is not my wife. I cannot risk the media catching wind of this and sparking a scandal."
Grant didn't push back, but repeatedly begged Lucius to make sure the surgeon was brought back for Liliana.
Lucius got into his car and sped toward the private medical facility.
The medical transport carrying Madeline had arrived hours ago. The staff had already prepped her, and Lucius lightly knocked on the door of her private suite.
He pushed it open and stepped inside.
Madeline's hospital bed was elevated. She was sitting up, her breathing perfectly steady. Only her legs remained lifeless beneath the blankets. Thanks to a few days of aggressive medication and her own robust constitution, she showed no outward signs of trauma. Dressed in a pristine hospital gown, she looked devastatingly beautiful, despite her pale complexion and the icy detachment in her eyes.
But Lucius's mind was plagued by the image of Liliana's mangled, pus-covered body, her shattered bones jutting out like a broken machine that had been violently crushed in half.
"Horrific" was too mild a word for Liliana's condition.
Madeline, by comparison, looked completely put together.
