The next morning.
The sky was barely turning a soft, pale gray when Ivy forced herself out of bed, biting back the intense soreness in her thighs as she frantically gathered their clothes scattered across the floor.
Glancing at Alaric, who was still dead to the world, she figured he'd wake up with a massive headache.
She hurried downstairs to brew some Hangover Tonic.
By the time she brought the steaming mug back up to the master bedroom, Alaric was already awake.
He was sitting up against the headboard, groggily massaging his temples.
Seeing him sitting there, the memories of last night’s wild intensity came rushing back. Ivy’s heart slammed into overdrive, her cheeks flushing furiously.
Steeling herself, she forced herself to walk over.
"Do you still feel awful? I made you something for your head."
Alaric looked at her.
His handsome face revealed absolutely nothing, and his tone was as detached as ever.
"What happened to me last night? Why does my entire body ache?"
Ivy's chest tightened. She set the mug down on the nightstand, taking a shaky breath to hide her panic before turning back to face him.
"You don't remember what happened last night?"
Alaric rubbed his temples, trying to sift through the fog. A few fragmented flashes surfaced.
He vaguely remembered having his hands all over a woman.
He looked up, his gaze slowly dragging over Ivy as he assessed her, deciding that was impossible.
This woman only cared about cash. Unless he explicitly offered to pay her, there was absolutely zero chance she'd willingly climb into his bed and let him take her.
It must have been a dream.
It wouldn't be the first wet dream he'd had since she moved in.
So that had to be it.
Alaric picked up the mug and took a sip.
"I've got a killer headache. I have no idea what went down last night."
Then he added, "I didn't try anything with you, did I?"
The girl looked perfectly fine standing there. If he had actually done anything to her, she wouldn't be acting this calm.
He just hadn't expected her to be the star of his late-night fantasies.
However, once they were at the breakfast table, the little girl looked straight across at Alaric and announced,
"Daddy, you need to call Elena over to check on Mommy later. Mommy's neck is super hurt. She said a bug bit her, but what kind of bug could bite her that bad?"
Ivy panicked, her eyes shooting toward the man sitting across from her.
Seeing his calculating stare zeroing in on her, she quickly dropped her gaze and fumbled for an excuse.
"I'm fine. Stop listening to a child's imagination."
Stella wasn't backing down.
"Your neck is hurt, Mommy. There's a giant mark, I saw it! It looks super serious. We definitely need Elena to look at it."
She turned back to Alaric, demanding action.
"Daddy, call Elena right now."
Alaric kept his eyes locked on Ivy, his tone flat. "Let me see. How bad is it?"
Ivy clamped her hand over her collar, shaking her head furiously as guilt washed over her.
"It's not bad at all, just a minor irritation. I'll just grab some ointment at the hospital later."
She silently cursed him. Was the man secretly a vampire or something?
