Ivy finished ordering and looked up, answering Elena with absolute honesty.
"Mr. Foster doesn't have any other women around him."
"So you've just been staying at The Starlight Estate all this time?" Elena pressed.
Ivy didn't deny it.
She had an inexplicable, ominous feeling about this.
It felt like this woman inviting her out to lunch was just a trap waiting to be sprung.
She definitely needed to tread carefully.
Elena pleaded softly.
"Since you're always at The Starlight Estate, could you keep an eye out for me? If Alaric ever brings a woman home, could you let me know right away?"
Ivy looked at her, entirely bewildered.
Elena lowered her gaze with a soft, bashful smile.
"You might not know this, but I've had feelings for Alaric for years. However, he's never been able to move on since Stella's mother left. He asked me to wait for him, to give him a little more time."
"But I'm terrified of waiting only to end up with nothing, so I need you to help watch him for me, just to see if he gets involved with anyone else."
Hearing this, Ivy's heart twisted with a sharp, suffocating ache.
So Dr. Elena Sinclair was in love with Alaric.
No wonder Alaric insisted she keep their marriage a total secret.
He was probably terrified that Elena would be heartbroken if she found out.
So in Alaric's mind, their marriage was destined to end sooner or later.
Probably as soon as Stella was a little older.
Realizing that Mr. Foster and Elena were meant to be a couple, Ivy felt a suffocating tightness in her chest, leaving her gasping for air.
She suddenly had no idea what to do.
She even felt a wave of crushing guilt, convinced she was the other woman ruining someone else's relationship.
If she hadn't pushed Mr. Foster to marry her...
Maybe he and Elena would already be together.
No wonder he had always been so coldly distant toward her.
If she were in his shoes, she wouldn't be handing out smiles either.
"Ivy, what's on your mind? You look incredibly pale."
Seeing Ivy sitting there with her head bowed, completely speechless, Elena felt utterly certain that Ivy must have fallen for Alaric too.
Even if she hadn't, with Alaric's net worth and massive fortune, she would likely cling to The Starlight Estate forever.
Hearing that Mr. Foster already had someone in his heart still left Ivy feeling incredibly bitter.
She barely ate a bite before standing up, offering Elena a dry smile.
"Thank you for lunch, Elena. I need to get back to the hospital for my shift."
Elena waved at her with a bright smile. "Alright, let's do this again soon."
Ivy didn't reply. As she walked back to Metropolitan General, her mind was a miserable, swirling mess.
"Why do you look so awful after just grabbing lunch? Are you okay?"
Ivy shook her head. "I'm fine."
On a sudden whim, she asked Ethan, "Do you know Elena?"
Ethan furrowed his brow in pure confusion. "Who?"
"Dr. Elena Sinclair. She's supposedly... your uncle's friend."
Ethan was still completely lost. "Never heard of them. Guy or girl?"
"A woman. A very beautiful one."
In Ivy's eyes, Elena truly was stunning—tall, gorgeous figure, and a successful doctor to boot.
