Ivy saw that he was angry again.
She increasingly felt that this older man had an incredibly eccentric temper.
It seemed she needed to pay closer attention to her words and actions from now on, absolutely keeping her mouth shut about things that weren't her business.
During dinner, thinking about the recent shift in her work schedule, Ivy felt a surge of curiosity and couldn't resist looking over at Alaric.
"Mr. Foster, did you use your connections at Metropolitan General to rearrange my shifts?"
If this husband of hers hadn't arranged it...
She truly couldn't fathom why the hospital would give her such special treatment.
Before, their shifts had always been incredibly busy, packed with constant overtime.
Absolutely no one got to clock in at nine in the morning and leave by four in the afternoon.
If her husband really had pulled some strings, Ivy felt she ought to give him a proper thank you.
Alaric glanced at her, offering no denial.
"I won't force you to resign, but use your extra free time to keep Stella company. The $5,000 monthly allowance I promised you won't be short a single cent."
Ivy's eyes practically sparkled when she heard that.
What kind of absolute dream husband was this?
Not only had he made her work hours far more manageable, but he was still paying her the $5,000 a month just to spend her free time with Stella.
On top of that, she was entirely exempt from laundry, cooking, and household chores in this estate.
In that moment, she suddenly realized she had completely won the lottery.
Suppressing her internal thrill, Ivy hastily thanked him.
"Thank you. From now on, whenever I'm not at work, I'll spend all my time with Stella."
Alaric didn't say another word, keeping his head down as he elegantly continued his meal.
Overjoyed, Ivy eagerly used the serving fork to place some food on his plate.
"This is delicious, you have to try it."
Alaric, unaccustomed to the gesture, darkened his expression. "Eat it yourself if you like it. Don't put things on my plate."
He picked the food up and discarded it onto his side plate, a look of utter distaste on his face.
His blunt rejection left Ivy feeling incredibly awkward.
Fortunately, the little girl beside her came to her rescue.
"Give it to me, Mommy! I want to eat it."
"Mommy, why do other people's mommies and daddies kiss and hug every day, but you and Daddy don't? Are you not in love?"
Those two sentences left Ivy completely stunned.
Embarrassment washed over her face as she instinctively glanced at the man across the table.
Alaric still wore a dark scowl, his attitude turning cold even toward his daughter.
"Stella, kids shouldn't be thinking about nonsense like that. Finish your food and go study."
The little girl pouted and shot her dad a glare before lowering her head in grievance.
Ivy had no idea what to say.
Because she and her husband truly weren't in love.
Let alone love, they didn't even like each other.
They had barely spent a few days together.
How could they possibly act like a normal married couple?
Ivy only hoped that, until she saved up enough money, she and Mr. Foster could just maintain this respectful distance.
After dinner.
