Ivy gasped in sheer disbelief.
The Vance family had paid her medical bills and a settlement for emotional distress?
Summer had actually paid up?
Did that mean Alaric had found the evidence and completely cleared her name?
Joy surged through her. Before she could even articulate her gratitude over the phone, Alaric spoke again.
"You can report back to work at Metropolitan General tomorrow."
Tears of happiness welled in her eyes. "Thank you, darling," she blurted out.
That single word sent a jolt of electricity straight to Alaric's core.
Unsure of how to respond, he abruptly ended the call, as if terrified someone might catch the faint flush creeping up his neck.
Ivy, of course, was completely oblivious.
Staring at the disconnected screen, she assumed she had crossed a line and annoyed him with the pet name.
She sighed. She really was getting carried away lately.
She needed to dial it back and remember her place.
Still, the thought of returning to the hospital had her practically vibrating with excitement. After giving Mrs. Gable a quick heads-up, she headed straight to the grocery store to pick up some fresh ingredients.
She was going to make a spectacular dinner to thank him properly.
Her trip out was pleasantly uneventful.
No one whispered behind her back.
When people did look her way, their gazes were friendly.
The moment she walked through the front door, she received a news link from her sister about an official police statement.
That was how she learned Summer had been officially arrested and confessed to everything, including the hotel setup in Bayshore City.
Ivy was floored. She never expected Alaric to go as far as sending his own niece to prison just to defend her.
How could she not fall for a man with such a fierce, uncompromising sense of justice?
She quickly typed out a text to him.
[To thank you for clearing my name, I'm making your favorite tonight. You have to come home for dinner.]
A warm, fuzzy feeling settled in her chest as she put her phone away and hurried into the kitchen to start prepping.
