Terrified, she scrambled backward onto the dry sand, watching helplessly as Alaric boarded the yacht.
Nearby, Maisie and Gideon climbed aboard as well.
A malicious idea sparked in Mason's mind. The moment Alaric disappeared into the lower cabin, Mason shoved the captain away from the helm, took the wheel, and floored the throttle, sending the yacht rocketing away.
Ivy was still sitting on a tiny, isolated patch of shallow sand.
Seeing the yacht suddenly speed off, a spike of pure panic pierced her chest. She jumped to her feet, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"Where are you going? I'm not on board yet! Come back!"
But no one at the helm paid her any mind.
Mason pushed the throttle to the max. The yacht tore across the surface of the ocean, instantly putting miles between them and the shore.
Feeling the sudden lurch of the boat, Maisie stood up in the cabin in alarm. "Where is Ivy?"
Alaric realized they were moving too. But Ivy was still on the beach.
He sprinted up to the deck.
But staring out at the vast, endless ocean, Ivy was nowhere to be seen.
Seeing Mason at the controls, he instantly knew it was intentional.
Alaric lunged forward, grabbing him by the collar. "What the hell are you doing? Didn't you see we left someone behind? Turn this boat around right now."
A cold sneer touched Mason's lips. "Worried about her?"
"I said, turn the boat around."
Alaric's patience snapped, his aura turning dangerously lethal.
Ignoring the threat, Mason just pushed the throttle harder, speeding further into the open water.
Furious, Alaric slammed his fist directly into Mason's jaw. He shoved the man aside, grabbed the wheel, and desperately spun it around.
He wanted to retrace their path.
But in the middle of the ocean, every direction looked exactly the same.
He had no idea which heading they had taken from the sandbar.
All he could do was drive purely on instinct, scanning the endless blue expanse.
