The moment he approached the door of the VIP suite, Alaric could hear the heart-wrenching, muffled sobs of a girl crying inside.
His brow furrowed deeply, his mind involuntarily flashing back to the horrifying image of Ivy tumbling down those stairs last night.
She had cried out in exactly the same agonizing pain, and he had cruelly assumed she was faking it.
Stella didn't hesitate for a second. She burst through the door, sprinting straight to the bed to press herself against Ivy's side.
"Mommy, what happened to you? Why are you hurt so badly? Don't worry, Mommy, I'll blow the pain away! If I blow on it, it won't hurt anymore."
True to her word, Stella leaned in and began blowing gentle puffs of air over Ivy's battered body.
Ivy was in absolute, excruciating agony, her sobs escaping her lips despite her best efforts.
She never in a million years expected Stella to show up here.
Glancing up, she saw Mr. Foster walking into the room right behind her.
She desperately tried to rein in her tears, struggling fruitlessly to sit up. Trapped flat on her back, she looked at him with devastating misery.
"I am so sorry, Mr. Foster. I'm completely useless right now. I can't help you take care of Stella."
Unable to endure the bone-crushing pain radiating from her multiple fractures, heavy tears continued to spill freely from the corners of her eyes.
Seeing Ivy cry broke Stella's heart completely. The little girl burst into tears, her tiny hands frantically trying to wipe the moisture from Ivy's face.
Standing off to the side, it would be a total lie to say Alaric wasn't emotionally moved.
After all, the chief surgeon had made it incredibly clear: she had suffered multiple severe bone fractures on top of suffering from chronic malnutrition.
She was just a fragile girl in her early twenties.
It was entirely natural that she couldn't grit her teeth and bear that level of horrific physical torment.
Yet, even while completely paralyzed and shattered, her first thought was still apologizing for failing his daughter.
Alaric felt an undeniable softening in his chest. Looking down at her, his voice was surprisingly gentle.
"You don't need to apologize to me. Just focus on healing. Don't worry about anything else. Even if you can't take care of Stella right now, you will still receive everything I promised you."
She was, after all, his legally wedded wife.
Even knowing she had married him with glaring ulterior motives, simply for Stella's sake, he would still employ the absolute best medical experts in the world to piece her back together.
"Thank you, Mr. Foster."
Especially with both of them dissolving into hysterical tears.
It caused a strange, suffocating tightness in the chest of a hardened man like him.
Naturally, the predominant emotions crushing him were intense guilt and self-reproach.
If he had just swallowed his disgust and caught her last night, this horrific tragedy would never have occurred, and Ivy wouldn't be suffering like this.
Desperate to let his daughter provide the comfort Ivy clearly needed.
Alaric walked over to the plush sofa across the room and gracefully sat down.
"Let her stay and keep you company a little longer. We'll head back later."
He then signaled for the private nurse to step forward and begin feeding Ivy the gourmet meal.
Seeing that Mr. Foster not only refused to leave but had actually made himself comfortable.
Ivy felt incredibly embarrassed to keep sobbing. Despite the blinding agony wracking her body, she forced a brave, wobbly smile for the little girl clinging to her bed.
"Stella, let's stop crying, okay? Honestly, I don't feel any pain at all."
