Alaric's expression went from dark to furious, and finally to absolute ice.
He glared at Ethan as if he wanted to impale him where he sat.
Seeing Ethan lavish so much concern on Ivy sparked a vicious, acidic burn in his chest.
"Awfully worried about her, aren't you?" he sneered.
"Well, yeah, she's my friend," Ethan replied without missing a beat. "When I was stuck in the hospital, she was the one taking care of me."
"Come on, be a good guy for once. Get her job back."
Ethan was practically whining on her behalf.
The sound of it gave Ivy full-body goosebumps.
She quickly intervened. "Ethan, stay out of my business. I can handle my own affairs."
Ethan looked at her, his handsome face scrunching up. "I'm just trying to look out for you."
"Enough."
Seeing him push the boundary, Ivy's expression hardened, her tone turning downright hostile.
"I don't need you looking out for me. Do me a favor and stop meddling in my life. We aren't even that close."
"Ivy..."
The harsh rejection stung.
A layer of undeniable hurt washed over his handsome features.
"I genuinely consider you a friend. I just wanted to help. I know what kind of situation your family is in, and I..."
"My family's situation has absolutely nothing to do with you."
Cutting him off, Ivy scrambled to her feet, entirely fed up and ready to leave.
"Wait!"
Stella lunged and grabbed her hand.
"Don't go! You don't have to work at the hospital. I'll make my daddy hire you to take care of me. He'll pay you ten thousand dollars a month!"
Gripping Ivy tightly, the little girl spun around to face Alaric.
"Daddy, let her stay and take care of me! Pay her ten thousand dollars a month, please?"
"Don't be mad. If Daddy won't pay you, I will! I have my own money. I'll pay your salary, just please don't go."
Realizing Ivy was genuinely upset, Ethan hurriedly apologized.
"I'm sorry, Ivy. I crossed a line. Just pretend I'm not even here. If Stella wants you to stay and hang out, you should stay."
Ethan remained blissfully unaware of the absolute murder burning in his uncle's eyes.
Nor did he realize that the woman he was crushing on was legally his aunt.
Ivy looked down at the little girl clinging to her leg.
Defeated, she let Stella pull her back down to the blanket.
She didn't dare look at Alaric. She didn't need to see his face to know how angry and disgusted he was with her.
Whatever. The worst he could do was kick her out of The Starlight Estate.
"You are so annoying! Stop talking to her. Can't you see she doesn't even like you?"
Stella snapped fiercely at Ethan.
