But Nelson's grip was like iron, locking her firmly in place before he turned to the sobbing Beatrice. "Beatrice, help Walter up."
Beatrice turned deathly pale the moment she saw him.
She scrambled to her feet, violently snatching Juniper's hand away from Nelson.
She had no idea where the sudden courage came from. She was practically suffocating under the crowd's judging stares, but she knew deep down... she knew Juniper couldn't afford to get tangled up with a man like Nelson, or it would ruin her life completely.
Juniper steadied herself, stepping forward to help Walter up.
Walter was completely sober now, his face bruised and swollen. He looked around at the crowd, and then glared at Juniper.
Walter was a useless man who had achieved absolutely nothing in his life, which meant his pride was the only thing he cared about.
His ego was everything; it was more important than life itself.
He shoved Juniper away violently and scrambled to his feet. Driven by an overwhelming wave of humiliation, he raised his hand and slapped Juniper hard across the face. "This is all your fault! If it weren't for you, would I be standing here getting humiliated like this?! Why did I have to be cursed with a daughter like you? You should have just died in the streets! Your mother and I never should have come looking for you!"
He desperately tried to cover his shirtless torso. Back in his rural village, ripping his shirt off during a drunken bender was completely normal, but standing in front of these impeccably dressed elites, he felt nothing but sheer, crushing shame. Every single thing in this room was something he couldn't afford.
He bolted toward the exit like a madman, the grand doors suddenly feeling miles away.
Juniper's cheek was already badly swollen, and the fresh slap sent a blinding spike of pain through her face.
But she didn't seem to feel it at all; her heart had completely flatlined into numbness.
The bodyguards showed no mercy as they shoved Beatrice and Juniper. "Get out! Both of you!"
But because Nelson had stepped in just moments before, the crowd was now burning with curiosity—what exactly was the relationship between Nelson and this disgraced woman?
Perhaps the crowd's stares were too intense, or perhaps Yvonne's expression had turned too dangerous.
Lydia quietly reached down, giving Josie's arm a hard pinch.
Taking the cue, Josie threw herself at Nelson. "Dad!"
After crying out to him, she whipped around and shoved Juniper hard. "Don't talk to my dad! You're a bad woman! Stop trying to seduce my dad!"
