He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 169

While she was lost in thought, Beatrice suddenly grabbed her hand.

Looking utterly drained, Beatrice shook her head. "Forget it. Let's just drop it. We'll take your dad home and make him comfortable for whatever time he has left."

It was a death sentence.

This was a common practice in the village. When someone got cancer, families rarely wasted money on treatment. They simply brought them home to care for them.

Calling it care was a generous lie; it was simply waiting for the person to die so they could throw a massive funeral and collect all the cash gifts they were owed.

Brooks stared at his mother in sheer horror. Deep down, he still cared for his parents. "Mom, are you out of your mind? The doctor said there's a chance! If we give up now and Dad finds out, it'll break his heart!"

Beatrice's fragile composure snapped, and she started screaming. "That stubborn old fool doesn't even want to live anymore! Why bother saving him?! He just wants to curl up and die! He spent his whole pathetic life obsessed with his pride, and he threw it all away right at the end!"

Brooks had no idea what had transpired at the hotel, but he refused to let his father die without a fight.

He took a deep breath, squeezing his eyes shut. "Let's ask the doctors about conservative treatment first. We can start with whatever drugs they have domestically."

The second the words left his mouth, Nadine shrieked. "Do you have any idea how much that costs?! Brooks, can you even pull together a dime right now? We are completely broke, and you are unemployed!"

Brooks stayed quiet for a few seconds. "We can sell the house first..."

Smack!

A vicious slap landed squarely on his cheek.

Unsatisfied, Nadine lashed out, striking him several more times in a blind rage. "Are you out of your psychotic mind?! Sell the house?! We bought that place for a fortune, and in this market, we'd barely scrape by! We still owe hundreds of thousands on the mortgage! If you sell it now, we'll walk away with pocket change and no roof over our heads!"

Nadine was so furious her stomach physically cramped. She doubled over, clutching her belly. "If you dare sell that house, I will jump off the balcony and take your kid with me!"

The chaos in the room was deafening. A nurse finally stormed in. "Keep it down! There are sick people next door! And you, you're pregnant! Get your temper in check before you stress the baby."
