She must have been too greedy back then.
That was why she was being punished.
She had coveted Nelson Saint, the untouchable star everyone wanted to pull from the sky, and now karma had come for her.
The chime of the elevator broke the silence. Juniper didn't answer Lydia's request.
She had no desire to see Mrs. Thorne.
Nelson stood beside Lydia, acting as if he were backing up her every word. "You really are heartless."
The words pierced straight through Juniper's chest, draining the color from her face.
It was true. The Thorne family had funded her education, yet knowing Lydia had feelings for Nelson, Juniper had still desperately, pathetically fallen for him.
Nelson was mocking her for being ungrateful, and it certainly looked that way.
She should have just stayed quiet and played the role of the perfect little pawn. How dare she entertain any other desires?
She deserved this.
But Nelson, if you hadn't taken it upon yourself to hand that Thorne family stipend card to Beatrice Lane, she never would have been forced into a corner to accept their charity.
She still didn't understand. Her family hadn't been so destitute that they needed a sponsor, yet her mother had practically forced her to take that card.
And why did Nelson have to lie, claiming it was just from a wealthy friend and wouldn't be a burden to her?
That card had weighed heavily on her for years, making even falling in love feel like a crime.
Zara's voice broke through the tension just then. "Juniper."
She called out, walking over at a brisk pace, but stopped abruptly when she saw Nelson. "Nelson?"
Her gaze darted quickly between him and Juniper. She seemed to recall something but kept it to herself.
She simply took Juniper by the arm. "Sorry to keep you waiting. I'll drive you home."
Juniper had been desperate to escape anyway. She followed Zara without a word and slipped into her car.
Nelson stood motionless, seemingly indifferent as he and Lydia walked in the opposite direction.
Out of the corner of her eye, Juniper saw Lydia suddenly wrap her arms around Nelson, and Nelson looked down at her.
They truly were the perfect power couple.
Her heart ached sharply. She forced herself to look away.
What did she have to do to stop feeling this way? Was throwing away all those memories not enough?
