Stella completely ignored Jarrod's absurd accusation. She offered a dismissive, paper-thin smile. "Let me know when your arm is healed. We'll head back to the registry to submit the paperwork."
She turned around to leave.
"Stella Quinn!"
Jarrod lunged forward, blocking her path. His expression was feral. "So that's it? You're just going to walk away without a single word of explanation?"
Stella looked up at him, her eyes completely dead. "Explain what? You were the one at the hospital who promised you wouldn't waste my time anymore. You said we would file the paperwork immediately. So what's your problem with me leaving now?"
Jarrod was completely choked on his own words. His dark eyes drilled into her, searching for any crack in her armor, but there was nothing. No anger, no sorrow. Just a cold, finalized detachment.
His Adam's apple bobbed. Finally, he spat out, "If you want to leave, then leave. Do whatever the hell you want."
Without waiting for her to move, Jarrod turned his back on her and stormed violently back into the house.
Stella watched his retreating figure for a second before continuing her walk down the driveway.
Inside the house, Yvette recoiled at the sight of Jarrod's murderous expression. "Jarrod? Did you guys fight? This is all my fault. I never should have come here. I'll pack my things immediately."
Jarrod forced down the suffocating rage threatening to tear out of his chest. His voice was entirely devoid of warmth. "It has nothing to do with you. Stay as long as you need."
"Should I talk to Stella? I can explain everything so she doesn't ruin your marriage over my stupid drama," Yvette offered timidly.
Jarrod headed straight for the stairs. "Don't bother. I'm grabbing some files and going straight to the office. I'll be working late the next few nights. I won't be sleeping here."
...
When Stella arrived at SD Apparel, the technicians were already deep into the repairs. They had replaced all the salvageable parts, but a few highly specialized components had to be expedited from out of state. They wouldn't arrive for another two days.
Stella did the math in her head. As long as the parts arrived on time and the calibration went smoothly, they would barely make the production deadline. Half the crushing weight on her chest finally lifted.
