Yvette's forehead was still bandaged, but she was now dressed in a brand-new, high-end loungewear set. Based on the luxurious fabric and impeccable cut, Stella instantly recognized it as Jarrod's favorite designer brand. He had clearly ordered it delivered for her yesterday.

Yvette looked so pitiful and apologetic, acting like a terrified stray dog ready to bolt out the door at the slightest sign of rejection.

Stella's smile never wavered. Her voice was impossibly soft. "You're overthinking it, Yvette. I've just been slammed with work lately. You should just cook whatever you and Jarrod like. Don't worry about me."

Hearing that, Jarrod's gaze snapped to Stella.

He hadn't realized it in the past, but after living together these past few months, he had finally cracked her code: whenever Stella spoke in that perfectly sweet, accommodating tone, she was furious.

It was her ultimate defense mechanism when she was too boxed in to express her actual anger.

"Yvette didn't mean anything by that," Jarrod interjected smoothly, attempting to run interference. "She just doesn't want to intrude and was trying to do something nice for us."

Stella maintained her flawless smile. "I know. Enjoy your breakfast. I'm going to work."

"Eat something first. I'll drive you," Jarrod ordered.

Stella shook her head. "No need. I already booked a car."

Jarrod opened his mouth to argue, but Stella's phone started ringing. Seeing Mr. Stafford's name on the screen, she gave Jarrod a brief nod and walked toward the front door to answer it.

"Jarrod, was I completely out of line? Did I make Stella mad?" Yvette asked, her voice trembling with anxiety.

Jarrod stared at the front door, his jaw clenched in silence.

Yvette bit her lip. "Maybe I really should just move to a hotel. My husband probably won't find me anyway. I absolutely refuse to be the reason you and Stella fight."
