Letting out a small sigh, I answered the call.
Some people really couldn’t wait until Monday.
"Hello?"
Silence answered me.
I frowned slightly.
"Who’s this, plea....."
"Alicia."
I froze.
It was Alexander’s voice.
"Alicia... I know you’re still there."
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Do you need anything, Alexander?" I asked quietly.
He let out a slow breath before speaking.
"I’ll be returning to Velaridge City in an hour."
My breath hitched.
I didn’t know why...
But it did.
"I know I was the one who caused all of this."
"And I know it’ll be difficult for you to trust me again."
He paused.
"But I just hope that one day you’ll find it in your heart to forgive me."
My fingers unconsciously tightened around the phone.
"I’m leaving now, not because I’ve stopped loving you..."
"...or because I’ve given up on you."
"I’m leaving because I understand that you need more time."
His voice had become noticeably quieter.
"Whenever you’re ready..."
"You can introduce me to Aimy properly."
"Until then..."
"Think things over."
"If you still want a divorce..."
He paused one last time.
"...then we’ll get one."
I remained silent.
I didn’t know what to say.
Then I heard him speak again.
"I know you have your family with you now..."
"But Velaridge City will always be open to you."
"If you ever need anything..."
"...just one phone call is enough."
The call ended.
He didn’t even give me a chance to respond.
But then...
What would I have said?
I was the one who asked him to leave in the first place...
Right?
Then why...
Why did it hurt so much?
I stared at the dark screen.
I didn’t even know how he had gotten my phone number.
But then again...
This was Alexander Blackwood.
Getting someone’s contact information wasn’t exactly impossible for him.
After standing there for a while, I finally left my room and headed downstairs toward the dining room.
The staff members I passed glanced at me before greeting me politely.
I acknowledged them absentmindedly.
But all I could hear...
All I could think about...
...was how hollow and quiet Alexander’s voice had sounded over the phone....
When I arrived at the dining room, everyone had already started eating.
"Alicia, are you alright?" Aunt Margaret asked the moment she saw me.
"You should be more careful while walking."
I forced a smile.
"I’m fine, Aunt. Don’t worry."
"Hurry up and eat before everything gets cold," Aunt Veronica added.
I nodded obediently and took my seat.
"Sit properly this time, or you might bump into something again," Anna teased.
I shot her a playful glare before serving myself.
Aimy, who was sitting beside Anna, was too engrossed in her breakfast to notice our conversation. Her glass of apple juice was already half empty.
The atmosphere around the table remained light and cheerful.
Everyone chatted freely, laughing every now and then.
I tried my best to join in despite the turmoil inside me.
Alexander’s phone call kept replaying in my head.
His voice...
The way it had sounded so calm.
So resigned.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
"Are you sure you’re alright?" Anna leaned closer and whispered.
I looked at her before forcing another smile.
"Why wouldn’t I be?"
She searched my face for a moment.
It was obvious she didn’t believe me.
Still, she chose not to press further.
I appreciated that.
"Call an ambulance!"
His usually calm voice boomed through the room.
Anna immediately grabbed her phone while Aunt Margaret rushed to my side.
Within seconds...
Aimy’s little face became frighteningly pale.
Tiny beads of sweat appeared across her forehead.
Her breathing grew faster.
Shallower.
Her eyelids slowly began to droop.
"Mummy..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"I feel sleepy..."
Fear unlike anything I had ever known crashed into me.
"No."
I cupped her face with trembling hands.
"No, baby. Stay awake."
My voice shook uncontrollably.
"Look at Mommy."
I gently patted her cheek.
"Don’t close your eyes... please..."
She blinked slowly, as though even opening her eyes had become difficult.
Her tiny body curled instinctively against mine.
A weak whimper escaped her lips.
"We’re taking her to the hospital," Aunt Veronica said firmly.
"We can’t wait for the ambulance."
Uncle Herbert immediately bent down and carefully lifted Aimy into his arms.
For a brief moment...
I refused to let go.
It felt as though the instant she left my arms, something terrible would happen.
"Alicia."
Aunt Margaret gently held my shoulders.
"Calm down."
"We’re taking her to the hospital."
Only then did my stiff fingers finally loosen.
Uncle Herbert hurried outside with Aimy in his arms.
I followed so quickly that I almost stumbled.
He laid Aimy carefully across the back seat before getting behind the steering wheel.
I climbed into the back immediately, pulling Aimy gently into my arms.
Her little body felt unusually limp against my chest.
My heart pounded so violently it hurt.
Without waiting for anyone else, Uncle Herbert started the engine.
The car shot out of the mansion gates at full speed, racing toward the hospital.
