One of the security guards silently stepped forward and handed me a bouquet of white lilies before retreating again.
I knelt before the two headstones.
My fingers gently brushed away a few fallen leaves.
"Mum..."
"Dad..."
"I’m sorry it took me so long to come."
My voice trembled.
Then I smiled through my tears.
"But look who I brought with me."
Alexander lowered Aimy beside me.
I gently wrapped an arm around her.
"This is Aimy."
"The last time I came here..."
"She hadn’t been born yet."
"But look at her now."
"She’s already grown so much."
Aimy blinked at me in confusion before looking curiously at the two gravestones.
I smiled and stroked her hair.
"And..."
I looked toward Alexander.
"Alexander came with us too."
"I know."
"I’m sure you’re both surprised."
A small laugh escaped me.
"Don’t worry."
"The next time I come..."
"I’ll tell you everything that’s happened."
Beside me, Alexander quietly knelt down.
He didn’t interrupt.
He simply rested a comforting hand against my back, gently rubbing slow circles the way he always did whenever I was close to tears.
Words had never been his strength.
Even when we visited his own parents’ graves...
He rarely spoke.
He simply stood there in silence until it was time to leave.
But then this time, Alexander surprised me.
"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair," he said quietly after I was done talking.
His voice was calm, but I could hear the sincerity behind every word.
"I’m sorry it took me so long to come here. I know I haven’t been the husband Alicia deserved." He paused briefly before continuing. "I made countless mistakes. I hurt the person you entrusted to this world, and for that... I’m truly sorry."
He looked at me for a moment before his eyes shifted to Aimy.
"I know I don’t deserve another chance, but I hope you’ll still allow me to make things right. From today onward, I promise to be the husband and father my family deserves. I’ll protect them, cherish them, and make sure they’re always happy and safe."
His fingers gently stroked Aimy’s tiny hand.
"You have my word."
I stared at him in stunned silence, my heart tightening. Those weren’t empty words. For the first time, he wasn’t making a promise to me alone. He was making one to the people who had loved me before anyone else ever did.
I reached out and squeezed his hand gently, before he stood up and carried aimy into his arms.
After arranging the flowers neatly before the graves, we quietly said our goodbyes.
As we walked away, I couldn’t help remembering the last time I’d stood here.
Back then...
Alexander had only just found out about my pregnancy.
He had brought me here because he felt responsible.
Today...
He came because he wanted to.
At that time, all I could think about was finding the right moment to divorce him.
Now...
As I glanced at the man walking beside me while carrying our daughter in his arms...
I found myself looking forward to the future.
To the family we had finally found our way back building.
If Mum and Dad were truly watching us... I hoped they could see him now....
I hoped they could see us....
When we returned to the car, I quietly reached for Alexander’s hand.
"Thank you," I said softly.
He glanced at me with a questioning look.
"For bringing us here... and for being with us."
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
He gently squeezed my hand but didn’t say anything.
I knew that silence.
It was the same quiet mood he always slipped into whenever he was about to visit his parents.
The rest of the journey passed in silence.
Surprisingly, even Aimy stayed unusually quiet. She simply leaned against Alexander watching the scenery through the window until the convoy finally came to a stop.
We had arrived at the Blackwood family’s private cemetery.
As soon as I stepped out of the car, an overwhelming sadness settled in my chest.
Ever since Nana was buried...
This was the first time I had gathered the courage to come.
Alexander led the way without a word.
A few moments later, we stopped before four beautifully kept gravestones.
His parents.
His grandfather.
And Nana.
While Alexander carefully arranged the white lilies we’d brought on his parents’ graves, I knelt before Nana’s tombstone.
"Why?"
I looked at Alexander before answering softly,
"Because they aren’t here with us anymore..."
"But they’re still watching over us."
Aimy nodded, though I wasn’t sure she truly understood.
Perhaps one day she would.
We stayed a little longer before quietly arranging the flowers and saying our goodbyes.
As I stood, I instinctively looked back at Nana’s grave one last time.
Then we returned to the car.
After everyone had settled inside, Alexander turned toward me.
"Where to now?"
I fell silent.
I had promised Uncle Steve that I would bring Aimy to the Blackwood Mansion.
But the thought of returning there after two years...
To a home that no longer held Nana’s warmth or laughter...
Made my heart ache.
And...
Aunt Angela would be there.
The police had informed us only yesterday that Karen had finally confessed, and their investigation had also cleared Aunt Angela of any involvement in Aimy’s poisoning.
Even so...
The fear she had left inside me wasn’t something I could erase overnight.
Alexander gently covered my hand with his.
"If you don’t want to go," he said softly, "it’s alright."
"But if you do..."
"You don’t have to worry about anything."
"I’ll be with you."
I looked down at Aimy sleeping peacefully against me.
My hold around her tightened instinctively.
Then I looked back at Alexander.
"Let’s go to the mansion."
He studied my face for a moment.
"Are you sure?"
I nodded.
I had spent too many years letting fear dictate my life.
Not anymore.
No matter what happened...
I wouldn’t let anyone hurt my daughter again.
Alexander gave my hand one reassuring squeeze before giving the driver a quiet instruction.
The convoy slowly pulled away, heading toward the familiar streets that held both painful memories... and the family we still had waiting for us.
