Philip collapsed to the floor in a pathetic heap, lunging forward to grab Elaine's hem.
Elaine twisted out of his reach and stared down at him, her face an unreadable mask.
"Elaine, I screwed up! I swear I'll never do it again!"
"Can we please not talk about divorce in front of them?"
Philip looked up at her, sporting a bright red handprint on both sides of his face, looking utterly ridiculous.
Elaine let out a hollow laugh. "Them?"
"Did you care that they were standing right here when you cornered Mrs. Langford?"
Philip's throat felt like sandpaper. "I drank too much! I'm an idiot! I'll sleep in the doghouse, I'll crawl on my hands and knees if you want, just please don't mention divorce!"
"Sleep in the doghouse?"
Elaine stared at him. "Philip, do you honestly think those tired lines work on me anymore?"
"I'll change! I'll cut off every woman I've been seeing. You can have all my cards, check my phone whenever you want. I'll report my location to you every single time I leave the house!"
"That's exactly what you said last time."
"This time is different!"
"Which time was ever different?"
Out of options, Philip threw himself at Seraphina's mercy. "Mrs. Langford, please, say something! I lost my mind earlier, I'll do whatever it takes to make it right!"
Seraphina looked away in disgust. "I'm not the one you should be begging."
Philip nodded frantically. "Right, right, I need to beg my wife."
Elaine laughed bitterly. "Are you begging me because you're worried about breaking my heart, or because you're terrified I'll take back everything I gave you?"
Philip's lips trembled. "We've been married for years, Elaine. You know me better than that."
"I used to think I did."
Elaine's eyes were pools of absolute disappointment. "When you first joined the Zacharias family, you couldn't even hold your own at a basic business dinner. I was the one who introduced you to clients. My father handed you projects on a silver platter. My family vouched for you."
Philip panicked. "But I made the company millions after that!"
"You made some money, and suddenly you thought you were better than me?"
"I never thought that."
"Yes, you did."
