The night deepened, yet the CEO's office remained brightly lit.
Phoenix had her head buried in a mountain of contracts and documents, her brows furrowed tightly the entire time.
Astraea Group was in a turbulent phase, riding the crest of the wave. The situation in Highcrest was volatile, with every faction lurking like starving wolves.
Any partnership agreement that she didn't personally vet could become a hidden landmine, waiting to detonate a crisis.
One wrong step wouldn't just break bones; it would invite those corporate predators to tear down their defenses and swallow them whole.
A warm bento box was quietly pushed across the desk, blocking out the dense pages of terms and conditions.
Phoenix paused, snapping out of her complex thoughts, and looked up, her gaze colliding with Pierce's tender, aching eyes.
"Phoenix, do you know what time it is?" The man sighed softly, his tone filled with helpless affection.
Phoenix glanced at her watch. The hour hand had already crossed eight.
Only now did she belatedly register the gnawing emptiness in her stomach—she had been spinning non-stop all day, not even taking a moment for a sip of water.
"Sorry, I lost track of time." She rubbed her aching temples.
"Eat something right now. No matter how grim the situation is, you can't sacrifice your life for it." Pierce didn't leave room for argument. He slipped the pen from her fingers and pushed the open bento box closer to her.
Walking around the desk, his long fingers gently rested on her shoulders. "Even if the sky falls, I'll be here to hold it up for you."
The warm pressure on her shoulders slightly eased Phoenix's taut nerves.
She tilted her head back, offering Pierce a tired but soft smile. "I've made it this far entirely because Yara lifted me up back then. I can't let her down."
She paused, her gaze turning sharp once more. "Quentin has been too quiet lately. Given his style, this kind of hibernation absolutely means he's brewing a much bigger conspiracy."
She shook her head helplessly. "With wolves circling us, how can I afford to relax for a second?"
Pierce's large hand slid up to stroke the top of her head, his touch gentle and indulgent. "You're just pushing yourself too hard. Try sharing a bit of the burden with me, alright?"
He leaned in slightly, his warm breath brushing against her ear. "Don't forget, I am your rightful husband. We rise and fall together."
His deep, velvety voice was like warm water soothing a heavily strung bow, completely melting Phoenix's heart.
"Yeah, I'll try to lean on you."
