He owned coal mines, so stumbling across a tomb during excavation and looting it wouldn’t have been unusual.”

“So you think Gordon left the main burial chamber untoucked and hid the gold in one of the secondary chambers?” Beckett asked.

Autumn nodded. “That’s my guess. What do you think?”

“Something probably kept him from entering the main chamber,” Beckett said after a montent’s thought. “It’s probably the most dangerous part of the tomb too. Gordon may have left it alone to avoid unnecessary risk.”

“That’s possible.” Autumn said, “We’re here for the gold, not the antiques. I say we skip the main chamber and head straight for the secondary burial chambers. What do you think?”

“I agree. It’s the safer choice,” Beckett said.

The expert added, “With so many mutant animals and plants around now, the danger is much greater. There are only a few of us, so taking unnecessary risks wouldn’t be smart. But just because we leave the main chamber alone doesn’t mean those other two groups will. What if they go straight there and cause trouble?”

Autumn’s expression shifted slightly. “You’re right. I forgot about them.

“Then we need to move fast and avoid getting held up,” Autumn continued. “We’ll stick to the plan. Head straight for the secondary chambers, take what we came for, and leave. Ideally, we’ll be gone before they enter the main chamber. Whether they live or die after that is none of our business.”

Beckett smiled and nodded. “Works for me.”

The others agreed as well.

Autumn gave each of them a bottle of water. Once they’d recovered some strength, they doubled back and took a longer route toward the secondary burial chambers.

Meanwhile, Matthew and Keith, the two people Autumn had just complained about, were indeed heading toward the main burial chamber.

Keith’s family had built its fortune through tomb raiding, and he was convinced the best treasures had to be in the main chamber. He had no interest in the lesser grave goods.

Matthew was only tagging along for the excitement while making sure Keith couldn’t take the gold.

If Asher wants that gold, then only he can have it.

Keith led his people upward, rounded a corner, and abruptly stopped.

“Matthew, you’re not planning to stand around and do nothing the whole time, are you?” Keith asked. “Why did you even come?”

“To have fun. Is that a problem?” Matthew shot back. “I don’t know anything about excavating tombs. You can handle it.”

Keith’s eyes darkened as he studied Matthew’s bodyguards and weighed the cost of dragging Matthew into the danger.
