The passage looked almost exactly as it had on the drone footage, so they moved quickly, soon passing through a circular corridor and reaching a three-way intersection.

Autumn recalled the map Matthew had shown her and chose a winding passage that sloped downward.

They were here for the gold, not the coffin, so they bypassed the main burial chamber and headed toward the rooms where the grave goods were stored.

Scattered gunshots echoed from somewhere above, sounding especially loud inside the tomb.

Apparently, either Matthew’s team or Keith’s had run into some kind of creature.

Autumn became even more cautious. She clenched the flashlight between her teeth, pulled a miniature grenade from her pocket, and kept a firm grip on it, ready to strike at any moment.

She held her dagger in a reverse grip with her other hand, prepared to attack.

The people behind her followed her lead, staying on high alert as they moved forward with light, careful steps.

A faint scraping sound suddenly came from overhead.

Their flashlights immediately swung upward.

One look made everyone draw a sharp breath.

At some point, enormous house centipedes had covered the ceiling and walls, each one measuring somewhere between three and ten feet long.

Autumn put away her dagger and pulled out several more miniature grenades. “Try not to disturb them. If they react, use the grenades and keep as much distance as possible.”

Autumn handed each person more than a dozen miniature grenades.

They were only about the size of golf balls, so everyone could carry plenty of them. They were compact and easy to use.

“Go.” Autumn moved first, darting swiftly through the passage.

The others followed close behind, stayed right on her heels.
