The expert ran the calculations on the spot. “This area can only withstand miniature grenades and small explosive charges. Anything stronger could bring the entire cavern down.”

“Then what else can we do?” Everyone looked discouraged.

Autumn suddenly asked, “Do you think this two-headed shake mutated because of the tomb or because of the acid rain?”

Everyone paused. “What’s the difference?”

“A huge one,” Autumn said. “If the tomb caused the mutation, then this snake changed naturally after living here for so long. Creatures mutated by acid rain only changed recently. In other words, if this snake mutated from spending so much time inside the tomb, acid rain might still work on it.”

Beckett’s eyes lit up. “That’s worth trying. Why didn’t I think of that? We had to dig our own tunnel to enter this tomb, which means the entire place was sealed before we arrived. There was no way the acid rain outside could’ve gotten in.”

Autumn said, “Two-headed snakes existed before the apocalypse too. Look at this one. It’s thick, long, and terrifying, but it still looks like a normal snake. Most mutant animals exposed to acid rain changed dramatically in appearance. Since acid rain works on the sharks, this snake should react to it too, right?”

Everyone’s eyes brightened. “That makes sense!”

Autumn asked, “Try it?”

Everyone answered, “Let’s do it!”

They acted immediately.

Autumn pulled a tank of acid rain from the storage space and sprayed it at the two-headed snake with a water gun.

At first, the snake’s eyes were filled with contempt, as though it were merely toying with a group of inferior humans.

But when the acid rain struck its body and white smoke began rising from its sizzling scales, disbelief flashed through its eyes.

Seeing that it worked, Autumn pulled out several more tanks of acid rain and a pile of water guns. “Quick, everyone grab one!”

The others picked up the water guns and sprayed the two-headed snake together.

Within seconds, the enclosed passage filled with a sharp, acidic smell mixed with a strange sweetness.

The snake flew into a rage and lunged at the arrogant humans despite the pain burning through its body.

One head targeted Autumn while the other struck at Beckett.

Autumn dropped the water gun, drew her blade, and met the snake head-on.

Beckett did the same on the other side, swinging his machete with tremendous force.

Autumn wedged her blade between the snake’s jaws, preventing it from closing its mouth, and shouted at the others behind her, “Spray inside its mouth! Now!”

Astream of acid rain shot straight into the snake’s mouth.

Autumn released her grip and rotted across the ground, slipping out of range.

Beckett shoved hard as well, then staggered back several steps.

The snake head that had swallowed a bellyful of acid rain twisted in shock and agony before thrashing wildly across the ground.

“Fall back, fall back!” Autumn put away the remaining tanks and water guns, grabbed the expert with one hand, and retreated as fast as she could.

Thud after thud echoed overhead.

The two-headed snake’s violent movements shook loose dirt and rocks from the ceiling.

Autumn and the others scrambled upward in a miserable state, eventually crawling on all fours through the dirt.

The commotion behind them grew louder, and the passage was already on the verge of collapse.

“Pfft, pfft!” Autumn spat dirt out of her mouth several times before she could speak. “We already got what we came for. Don’t waste time fighting them. We’ll go back the way we came. Worst case, we deal with those house centipedes again.”

“Works for me.” Beckett rubbed his head, sending a layer of dirt falling from his hair.

They exchanged grins and were about to climb upward.

At that moment, someone pointed toward a corner and shouted, “Look! What’s that?”

Autumn and Beckett turned at the same time and saw a pile of pale snake eggs exposed through a crack in the wall.

The eggs had originally been hidden safely inside the wall.

But the two-headed snake’s death throes had shattered the surrounding rocks and exposed them.

“Do you think these snake eggs are edible?” Autumn rubbed her chin, considering the possibility.

“Snake eggs were edible before the apocalypse,” Beckett said.

“Take them?”

“Yes.”

Autumn leaped over and reached out to collect the eggs.

But at that exact moment, something went wrong.

Another two-headed snake suddenly burst out behind her, baring its vicious fangs as both heads snapped toward Autumn’s head and shoulder.

The snake was so close that Beckett had no time to save her.

Beckett screamed desperately, “Hide! Now!”
