As the Council members leaned in to read, murmurs of agreement began to ripple through the room. Queen Tonya’s face paled with anger, but she kept her composure. “You still need to prove that the rules were broken, which is not the case.”
Markus’s expression remained resolute. “I can prove it.” He mind linked his Beta, Atlas, who promptly brought in Angelica inside the room.
Initially, Angelica was thrilled when Atlas sought her out, believing Markus wanted to meet her privately. Her excitement turned to dread when she entered the Council chamber and saw the assembled Council members. Her father, a reputable council member, looked at her with concern. “What is the meaning of this?”
Queen Tonya looked at her conflicted, while her temper was about to explode. What game was Markus playing?!
Markus addressed him calmly. “There is nothing to worry about, Councilor. Angelica is here to help us clarify something that happened yesterday. She would be in no trouble if she is truthful.”
Turning to Angelica, Markus asked, “Lady Angelica, can you tell us what was discussed yesterday at the tea party gathering when the Royal Courtship was officially announced?”
Angelica hesitated, glancing nervously at Queen Tonya. “It was a formal announcement about the Royal Courtship.”
Markus pressed on, “Can you tell us about the pre-selection criteria that were mentioned?”
Angelica looked like a deer caught in headlights, glancing at the Queen. She swallowed hard. “
There was no mention of any pre-selection.”
Markus felt the familiar twinge in his chest that indicated dishonesty. His voice grew stern. “Are you sure? Lying to a royal can be considered treason.”
Angelica’s face drained of color. “Yes, I am sure,” she whispered in a trembling voice.
Markus nodded, and then, in a commanding alpha voice that froze everyone, said, “Now, let’s try this again. Please reply to the question truthfully. What was mentioned on this topic?”
The room froze in shock. Angelica’s eyes filled with tears of fear and shame. She trembled as she finally confessed, “The contestants were informed about pre-screenings that would be made,
including purity… fertility and … physical checks.”
The Council members erupted into whispers of surprise and outrage. Angelica’s father shouted at
her, “Angelica, what is the meaning of this?”

Angelica stood there, tears streaming down her face, staring at the floor in shame. Markus addressed her calmly. “Thank you, Lady Angelica. It wasn’t so hard. Now, I will leave it to the Council to find a suitable punishment for your intentional lies.”
Turning to the Council, he continued, “As everyone can see and read the rules where no pre-screening was mentioned in the mandatory trials, considering this transgression, I declare the Royal Courtship void. As a result, as per the rules, within 30 days, I will select a mate of my choosing. Thank you all for your attention today.”
Markus stood up and left the room, his back straight and his expression cold. He ignored his mother’s fuming and shocked presence and Angelica’s silent sobs, his mind focused on the path
ahead.
After leaving the council chamber, Markus mind linked his beta, Atlas. “Prepare a helicopter for me
on an urgent basis. I need to visit the Stormheart Pack.”
Atlas responded promptly, “Consider it done.”
Several hours later, Markus landed on Stormheart territory. As he stepped out of the helicopter, he
was greeted by his best friend, Azriel. They exchanged a few words, their bond evident in their easy camaraderie, despite some looming tension.
“Have you put your affairs in order?” Azriel asked, his tone both concerned and hopeful.
Markus nodded firmly. “I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t.”
Satisfied, Azriel pointed towards a visa house nestled among the trees that Markus recognized as
being Kaia’s. “She’s been in there since yesterday, moping and barely eating.”
“Thank you, Azriel,” Markus replied, his determination clear in his voice. He made his way towards
the house, his heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and resolve.
Standing in front of the door, he took a deep breath and knocked. Moments later, the door opened
to reveal an exhausted and disheveled Kaia. She froze, her eyes widening in shock when she saw
Markus standing there. Before she could say anything, he stepped inside, closing the door behind
him, and without another word, he captured her lips in a hard, punishing kiss.
Kaia’s initial shock melted into a mixture of confusion and longing as she responded to the kiss, her hands instinctively reaching up to grasp his shoulders. The intensity of the kiss conveyed all the emotions Markus had been bottling up: anger, desperation, and need.
