Nightmares-1
As Elora’s first night in the cottage descended, she drifted into a restless sleep, only to be abruptly awakened by the echoes of her own terrified screams. Mary rushed to her side, concern etched
across her features as she gently shook Elora awake.
“Are you okay, sweetheart?” Mary asked, her voice laced with worry.
Tears streamed down Elora’s cheeks as she tried to compose herself. “I… I had a nightmare,” she
stammered, her voice quivering with fear.
“You wanna talk about it?” Mary asked.
“I dreamed about my day of banishment,” Elora replied with tears on her face.
“You will be OK, you will see. Now you are alive and far away from your pack. There is no one to
hurt you here now. You are safe.” Mary added, caressing her back.
In the days that followed, Elora found herself caught in a relentless cycle of searching for a job during the day, only to be met with rejection after rejection. Each day she went into the city with Mary and went from place to place, but no one wanted to hire a paperless girl who could not even
prove her age.
Each night brought haunting nightmares, leaving her feeling more exhausted and defeated than ever. Her only moments of solace were the ones spent with Mary, in the small cottage.
She realized terrified that without Mary’s help she would have been in a really critical situation.
Witnessing Elora’s struggles, Mary’s heart ached with empathy. For 10 days now, she had seen how the poor girl tried everything possible to find a job, but no one considered her. The only offer she got was from a strip club, but as a dancer. The poor girl ran terrified.
Mary knew she couldn’t stand idly. Determined to help, Mary decided to have a heart-to-heart
conversation with Elora to see how she could offer support during this difficult time.
After dinner, Mary gently guided Elora to the living room, her expression filled with concern.
“Lora, we need to talk,” Mary began, her voice gentle yet firm.
Elora followed, feeling skittish and burdened by a sense of shame that weighed heavily upon her.
Each meal she ate only served to exacerbate her guilt, knowing that she contributed nothing to the household. And it did not help that she always felt hungry in the last period. She even noticed on
her few clothes that she had gained weight because the jeans barely fit her around the waist.
Once seated on the couch, Mary reached out, placing a comforting hand on Elora’s trembling

“You need to stop punishing yourself like this,” she urged, her tone filled with compassion. “You’re
running yourself into the ground. You looked exhausted, and I noticed how you vomited your
breakfast. The stress will kill you if you don’t slow down. The cottage is spotless. I believe the spiders are terrified of your presence: you clean, you wash, you arrange, you cook and try to find a
job. But you can’t carry on like this. Enough is enough.”
Unable to contain her emotions any longer, Elora broke down in tears. “I don’t know what to do,”
she confessed, her voice trembling with despair. “Without my documents, I… I’m lost. No one
wants to hire a person who can’t even prove her own name or age, and the lack of experience is
making it worse. I was thinking about going to the police, but not sure that they would help me.”
Mary listened intently, her heart aching for the young girl before her. “Hm, I see. What was your status in the pack in terms of tasks, studies?” she asked gently.
Elora hesitated for a moment before responding, her voice trembling with pain. “I just finished high
school,” she began, her words filled with longing. “And I even passed the MCAT in February…”
Mary’s eyes widened in astonishment. “The MCAT? Medical College Admission Test? That’s a very
difficult exam. You were interested in the medical field?” she exclaimed, impressed by Elora’s
accomplishment.
With a heavy heart, Elora nodded, her voice tinged with sadness. “It was my dream to become a pack doctor,” she admitted, her words filled with longing. “To help people and heal suffering.”
