Lora’s eyes widened in surprise. “But you only saw her working with you for a year? Why?”
Kaia’s smile grew, this time with a hint of knowing. “Let’s just say she’s destined for something
bigger. She’ll be a future Beta female.”
Lora’s jaw dropped. “What? Wow, Kaia! This gift of yours is fantastic.”
Kaia nodded, feeling a sense of peace. She had found her answer. “Yes, it is. And I think I’ve found
the right person to stand by my side.”
The next few hours were a whirlwind for Kaia and Lora as they met with each of the shortlisted candidates for the role of Chief of Staff. It was a pivotal moment, and Kaia wanted to ensure she made the right choice. Lora, by her side, was quietly observing, her initial skepticism giving way to a deep respect for Kaia’s instincts.
First up was Alisa Morven. She entered the room with a sense of entitlement, her posture rigid and her expression cool, almost dismissive. Kaia greeted her warmly, but Alisa’s response was lukewarm at best. As the conversation progressed, it became clear to Lora that Alisa wasn’t merely professional: she was aloof, almost smug.
She carried herself as if she were already the Queen’s equal, offering thinly veiled critiques of the previous administration under the guise of suggestions for improvement. Lora noted how Alisa’s demeanor aligned with Kaia’s earlier vision; this was a woman who would always be comparing, always undermining. The meeting concluded without much warmth, and as Alisa left the room,
Lora could feel the tension lift.
Next was Corwin Voss. He was the complete opposite to Alisa: charismatic, charming, and with a magnetic presence that was hard to ignore. He breezed into the room with a wide smile, his eyes gleaming with confidence. He spoke in a manner that was both engaging and theatrical, making it hard not to be swept up in his enthusiasm.
But as Kaia listened, Lora could see the subtle shifts in her expression, the way her eyes narrowed ever so slightly, the way her fingers tapped restlessly on the table. Corwin was all smoke and mirrors, his flamboyance masking a cunning that was both impressive and unsettling. Lora found herself almost seduced by his charm, but a glance at Kaia reminded her of the warning she had given earlier. Beneath the polished exterior, Corwin was as slippery as they came, someone who would sell out anyone if it meant advancing his own ambitions. The meeting ended with Corwin’s
usual flourish, but there was no mistaking the lack of genuine connection.
Finally, they met Tamsin. From the moment she entered the room, it was clear she was different. Tamsin was visibly nervous, her hands trembling slightly as she adjusted her glasses. She wasn’t

the polished, confident candidate that the other two had been. Her professionalism was obvious,
but so was her anxiety.
Lora could see the conflict in her eyes; Tamsin was unsure why she had been summoned, especially when there were others, higher up in the hierarchy, who had yet to meet the new Queen.
Kaia’s voice was gentle as she asked, “Is everything alright, Tamsin?”
Tamsin took a long, shaky breath before replying, “Your Highness, I apologize for being so direct, but I didn’t expect to be called to meet you. I know many others are waiting, those who are higher in the food chain than I am. So, I’m a bit concerned. Is there anything in particular? Is something
related to my job? Is my role in danger?”
Kaia exchanged a brief glance with Lora, who nodded in encouragement. Kaia then smiled warmly at Tamsin. “Yes, Tamsin, it is related to your job.”
Tamsin’s face paled, and tears welled up in her eyes. “Please, Your Highness, show me mercy. I
know I allocated more than the usual supplies for the orphanage, but please, spare me. This job is
all I’ve got.”
For a moment, Kaia was speechless, taken aback by Tamsin’s plea. She hadn’t expected this level of fear, and it pained her to see someone so dedicated and conscientious feel so insecure. She reached out, gently touching Tamsin’s hand. “Tamsin, yes, this is about your career, but not in the way you think. You’re not here to be fired. It’s quite the opposite, in fact.”
Tamsin blinked in confusion. “What do you mean?”
Kaia smiled, her voice steady and reassuring. “What would you say if I offered you the role of Queen’s Chief of Staff? Is that something you would be interested in?”
Tamsin’s eyes widened in shock, her breath catching in her throat. “What? You… would you
consider me for the role?”
“Yes, I would,” Kaia replied, her smile widening.
Tamsin’s lip trembled as she struggled to find her voice. “But… there are others more qualified…”
Kaia raised a hand, cutting her off gently. “You’re going to say that you’re not confident you can do
it?”
“No,” Tamsin replied, fire igniting in her eyes as she straightened her posture. “I definitely can do it, Your Highness. It is just very unexpected.”
Kaia’s smile turned into one of pride and satisfaction. “Then it’s settled. You start with immediate effect. Now, why don’t you go to the en-suite washroom and refresh yourself? We have a lot of work to do.”

Tamsin nodded, still in shock but now filled with determination. As she left to compose herself,
Kaia and Lora exchanged a look, a silent understanding passing between them.
“You were right,” Lora said softly, admiration clear in her voice. “She’s perfect.”
Kaia nodded, feeling a deep sense of fulfillment. “I knew she would be. We’re going to do great
things together.”
As Tamsin returned, looking more composed and with a renewed sense of purpose, the three of them began to discuss the tasks ahead. Kaia felt a new surge of confidence, knowing that she had made the right choice, not just for herself, but for the kingdom.
