Azriel and Markus stepped back into the hospital maternity room, the soft hum of the machines and the occasional murmurs of nurses filling the air. As they entered, Lora, who had been sitting beside Kaia, holding the newborn’s tiny hand, glanced up at them and smiled, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “You two done plotting world domination?” she teased, her voice light but warm. The joke broke the tension that still lingered in the room after Azriel and Markus’s serious discussion outside.
Both men chuckled, shaking their heads. Azriel’s deep laughter echoed through the small room, and even Markus, weighed down by the burdens they had just discussed, couldn’t help but smile.
“Not quite,” Azriel replied with a smirk, approaching his mate, his eyes softening as he leaned down to kiss her forehead. “But it’s time to leave,” he said, his tone serious again but touched with tenderness.
He turned to his baby sister, Kaia, and for a moment, words failed him. She looked up at him, her face glowing with a new kind of happiness, a mother’s joy. In her arms, the tiny figure of her newborn son, Kaius, rested peacefully, swaddled in soft blankets. The sight hit Azriel harder than he expected. Memories of the past came flooding back: Kaia as a skinny, fragile girl, then as a young woman who had endured more pain and suffering than anyone should have to. And now, here she was, not only a queen but a mother, holding her future in her arms.
Azriel swallowed the lump forming in his throat, his emotions swirling beneath the surface. He had always been her protector, her pillar of strength through the dark days, and seeing her there, holding her newborn son, was almost surreal.
Kaia looked up at him, her eyes searching his, and he knew she could see the emotion he was trying so hard to keep at bay. She smiled at him, her big brother, the one who had been with her through every trial, every loss, every battle, and he smiled back, though his heart was heavy with love, pride, and a bittersweet sorrow for the family and friends they had lost.
Stepping closer, Azriel reached out and gently touched her shoulder, his fingers trembling slightly. His voice, thick with emotion, barely rose above a whisper.
“Kaia, I’m so proud of you,” he said, his throat tightening as he spoke. “My only regret is that our parents aren’t here to see how far you’ve come. They’d be so proud, just like I am. You should’ve been named
Phoenix, not Kaia, because you’ve risen from the ashes of everything that tried to break you, more
powerful than any of us ever imagined you could be.”
Kaia’s eyes filled with tears, and she blinked them back, her emotions mirroring his. The room seemed to
grow quieter, more intimate, as brother and sister shared the weight of their history and the joy of their
present moment. She sniffled softly, shifting Kaius in her arms before speaking. “I couldn’t have made it here without you, Azriel. You’ve been my rock, my guide, through everything. You were there every step of the way, and for that, I’ll be forever grateful.”
Azriel smiled, though his own eyes glistened with unshed tears. Kaia’s strength had always amazed him,

but hearing her gratitude, knowing that his support had meant so much, filled him with a deep sense of fulfillment. They shared a brief but powerful hug, careful not to disturb the baby sleeping in her arms. Markus, standing nearby looked on with a soft smile, his own heart full as he watched the bond between the siblings. He hadn’t just married into Kaia’s life; he had become part of this family, part of their shared history, their grief, their triumphs. And now, with Kaius in their lives, the future seemed brighter.
Azriel straightened up, clearing his throat to regain some composure, before turning back to Lora. “We should head out. The pack will be expecting us. He glanced back at Kaia one last time, his gaze lingering on the newborn for a moment longer.
