“Oh Goddess, Lora!” Mary exclaimed as she took her in her arms while Elora was sobbing. Just then, Mary’s mobile rang, but Mary ignored it. After some time, she sent Lora to refresh herself as they had to leave for the hospital.

Once alone, Mary checked her mobile and saw two missed calls from Doctor Luigi. Mary made the call back and soon enough her old friend replied.

Mary returned Doctor Luigi’s call, feeling a knot tighten in her stomach as she pressed the phone to her ear. After a few moments of friendly exchange, Doctor Luigi’s tone shifted, becoming more

serious.

“Mary, you remember the favor you asked a few years ago when you asked me to consult a human girl pregnant with a were pup. How well do you know Lora?” he asked abruptly.

Mary furrowed her brow, taken aback by the sudden change in conversation. “Lora?” she repeated, trying to gather her thoughts. “She’s a good girl with a difficult past behind her. Why do you ask

about her?”

Doctor Luigi’s voice was grave. “I wanted to give you a heads-up. Azriel is searching for her.” Mary’s heart skipped a beat. “Azriel?” she echoed. “Why would he be searching for Lora?”

“I’m not sure,” Doctor Luigi admitted, “but he’s on a rampage. He’s using all means necessary to find her. He even assigned his Beta and Delta to find her, and his wolf is almost feral. The entire pack is on the edge, his aura affecting everyone.”

Mary felt a surge of panic rising within her. “Thank you for letting me know,” she said, her voice trembling slightly.

“I really don’t know what to say, but maybe give her a heads-up on this if you are still in contact with her. I know that I swore absolute secrecy years ago when I assessed her medical case and I respected my promise to you, but if Alpha asks me directly if I know something more about her, I can’t lie, and I will not be able to keep this secret anymore.” Doctor Luigi told her in a low voice.

Mary took a long breath, “I know Luigi, and I am grateful for everything that you did for me, for her. I understand your position and I will not hold it against you.”

As she hung up the phone, Mary’s mind raced with worry and concern. Why would Azriel search for her so intensely? And why did Lora react like that?

Just then, Lora entered the kitchen with Asher in tow, who was insisting on a sleepover with one of

his friends.

Asher persisted with his plea for a sleepover, his young voice tinged with disappointment. Lora feeling drained and torn, shook her head gently, her exhaustion evident in her eyes.

As he retreated from the kitchen, muttering under his breath about being the only kid not allowed to have a sleepover, Lora’s heart sank. She felt like she was failing him, depriving him of the

experiences his friends took for granted.

Alone with Mary, Lora let out a heavy sigh. “What am I going to do, Mary?” she asked, her voice

tinged with desperation. “We can’t let him have sleepovers. The other parents would notice that

he’s much more powerful and developed for his age.”

Mary’s expression softened, her eyes reflecting the weight of the situation. “It’s time, Lora,” she said, her voice tight with emotion. “We can’t keep hiding the truth from him. He needs to know what he is and why he is different from others.”

Lora’s heart skipped a beat at Mary’s words. She knew she couldn’t avoid the conversation any longer. It was time to tell Asher the truth about who he really was, about the legacy he carried within him. But the thought of revealing such a monumental secret to her young son filled her with

fear and uncertainty.

“OK, then, we can do it this weekend,” Lora agreed.

Mary nodded her head before continuing, “I need to tell you something.”

“OK, what is it?” Lora replied as she was preparing the lunch pack for her son.

“I spoke with Doctor Luigi earlier, and he let me know that Azriel is searching for you.” Mary replied

in one sentence.

Elora stopped in shock as her heart jumped in her chest: hope and a bit of happiness, followed by dread, fear and panic. Her hands started to tremble as tears came to her eyes.

Just then, Asher came back to the table and started having his breakfast.

Lora looked at him as her heart squeezed and with a desperate plea she asked Mary, “What should

I do, Mary?”
