Sebastian had ordered a massive amount of takeout.
Seraphina offered it around, but not a single person in the secretarial department accepted. They were entirely focused on their work, and the high salaries The Hayes Group paid meant they could afford their own high-end meals.
Seraphina had been there all morning and only managed to process a single spreadsheet, which was riddled with errors. Simon had patiently tutored her for half the day, only to realize her eyes were constantly glued to the executive elevator.
Frustrated, Simon kept his face stern. "No thanks. I'll eat at the cafeteria."
Oblivious to the fact that their refusal was a hint, Seraphina felt energized. "Has Mr. Hayes eaten lunch yet? I'll bring some up to him."
Simon's first instinct was to stop her.
But then he reconsidered. This woman kept calling Mr. Hayes by his first name so casually. What if she really did have a connection to him?
So he didn't stop her, silently allowing Seraphina to take the Japanese food up to the CEO's office.
Once she practically skipped away, one of the secretaries sitting across from Simon whispered, "When I went up to deliver documents earlier, Mr. Hayes seemed to be in a terrible mood. If she just marches in there like that..."
Simon gave a meaningful smile.
"No one is in a good mood at work."
"We're not entirely sure what Mr. Hayes's temper is like yet. Having someone test the waters is perfectly fine."
The secretary gasped softly. "But what if Mr. Hayes gets angry?"
Simon shrugged, spreading his hands helplessly. "She's an intern. Interns are reckless."
The others nodded in sudden understanding. There was a reason management types were so devious.
There was a very good reason Simon was the head of the secretarial department.
Knocking on the door and entering, Seraphina placed the Japanese food on the desk. "Jaxson, I ordered lunch for you."
Jaxson looked up, his brow furrowing in irritation. "Who let you in?"
"I brought you lunch..."
"Get out. Take your food and get the hell out."
His attitude was uncompromising, and the sheer hostility in his tone, paired with the chilling look in his eyes, made Seraphina intensely uncomfortable.
"Jaxson..."
Jaxson pinched the bridge of his nose.
He hit the intercom button for the secretarial department and demanded immediately, "How did she get up here? From now on, no one comes up without my permission."
"Yes, Mr. Hayes."
Seraphina bit her lip in frustration. Jaxson was being so mean, much fiercer than he usually was. Was he having a bad day at work?
He could have just talked to her about it.
