Chapter 152
Cecilia’s POV
Leopold was quiet.
For a long while, neither of us said anything. His unreadable expression made my stomach tighten, and I feared what the silence meant, knowing it signaled trouble ahead.
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I was about to say something else, to break the tension that sparked between us. But then he spoke, silencing me, and I felt a wave of helplessness wash over me.
“We will talk about it at the end of the week, once the selection is over,” he murmured. “Until then, keep your head down and don’t start any trouble.”
He turned to leave, and just as he opened the door, he glanced over his shoulder at me.
“Return to your room,” he ordered. “You can participate in the rest of the consort selection events this week, but you won’t be invited back to this banquet this evening.”
With that, he was gone.
I blinked quickly, trying to keep the tears away. But I knew the attempt was futile. I pressed my lips together and stretched my shoulders as I stepped out of his study. I should have known Landon would be standing nearby, waiting to escort me back to my bedroom.
I let out a breath upon seeing him, and without a word, I passed him.
He followed me until we reached my door, and then I stepped through, about to shut it in his face, but he put his hand on the door, stopping me.
“He has a reason for certain things. Don’t doubt the King, Cecilia,” he warned me, his eyes fixed on mine.
I wasn’t sure what to say in response; more importantly, I feared that if I opened my mouth to speak, I would start to cry. Landon seemed to have sensed that, and he left my room fairly quickly, shutting the door behind him.
Only then did I allow the tears to fall.
“Mate will make it better,” Lora said softly.
I knew she was hopeful about our mate, but I wasn’t so sure anymore.
I barely slept the entire night, and I honestly had no energy to pretend to smile and go through the motions. But I also knew that I had no choice.
Like clockwork, Anna was at my door bright and early with breakfast. She gave me a polite smile before she disappeared from my room. She brought me assorted fruits and some coffee. I was genuinely thankful to her for that.
After I ate some of the fruit and drank the coffee, I got dressed in a simple dress. I was told that it didn’t need to be as elegant as the initial ceremony dress. Once I was dressed, I started towards the concubine lounge to meet with the others and figure ou what we were supposed to be doing for the day.
I stopped when I saw a group of women, the Alpha’s daughters, circling and cooing over something in the center. I found my steps faltering for a moment as I took in the sight, and then Sophia’s blonde hair came into view.
“He gave it to me this morning after we had breakfast in the garden,” she said, her smile wide and confident. The pendant on her chest shimmered, making me feel the weight of her growing influence.
My heart sank.
“It looks really expensive,” one of the women commented.
