Chapter 153
“Oh, Cecilia!” Sophia said as she made her way over to me, the other women eyeing me with disapproving looks. “I was hoping I’d be able to speak with you alone for a moment?”
I wanted to say no, but with everyone watching, I really didn’t want there to be a scene, so I nodded slowly.
“Sure,” I tell her, and I follow her away from the other women, even though I knew they were going to be listening in, regardless of where we went.
After we were a bit further away, Sophia turned to look at me.
“I hope there’s no hard feelings,” she said, her smile clearly fake. “I know that you were once close to the king. Being his favored concubine and all. But now that I’m here… it seems that his attention is falling on me and me alone. We had an incredible talk before the banquet last night, and he said the others he spoke to weren’t nearly as interesting as I am,” she continued.
My heart felt like it was about to explode, but I stood in front of her with my own plastered smile, trying not to let her see me break.
“He asked me on a breakfast date this morning, and we spent the entire morning talking. He gifted me this necklace,” she said, touching the gorgeous blue pendant dangling on her chest. “It’s almost looking like I could be the one chosen. But hey, it could be a good thing for you. Once the selection is over, I’ll be staying at the palace, and you’ll be returning home. It’ll be like none of this ever happened, right?”
Her smile was almost hopeful, though I could see right through her now. It was as if I had been knocked in the head, and now everything she said didn’t seem sincere.
“Yeah,” I tell her, my voice rough from barely using it all morning. “Right.”
Her smile only grew.
“Perfect. Then, I suppose I will see you later then.”
She turned on her heel and started back towards the other women.
I stood there for a moment longer, my legs barely wanting to work, but I eventually forced them to move, and I started towards the concubine lounge, trying hard to keep my breathing stable and my heart from beating out of my chest.
Later in the evening, we met up with the other women in the courtyard. My eyes immiedalty locked onto Leopold, who was standing with Sophia, who was basically draped around his arm. She was saying something to him, and he was nodding along with her as if he was deeply interested in whatever she was saying.
I pulled my eyes away from them, unable to watch them any longer.
“Tea is being served in the gardens,” Landon announced.
We headed towards the gardens, where a large table was set up along with a bunch of smaller ones. Leopold sat at the long table with Sophia right by his side.
There were no signs of any of the Alphas or Diana, so at least that was a plus. But it also made me wonder where my father and Diana were during all of this.
Landon directed me and some of the other concubines to another table, further away from the King’s table, and I couldn’t help the jab of jealousy I felt.
“Sophia, where is your necklace?” I heard one of the women loudly ask, drawing everyone’s attention towards their table.
Sophia frowned and reached up to touch the necklace around her neck before her fingers froze.
“It’s gone,” she said, panic flashing through her gaze. “I took a nap earlier… someone must have snatched it off when I was
Cracteris
sleeping.”
