Chapter 158
Cecilia’s POV
My mind refused to let it go.
It replayed everything over and over again, as though searching for something I had missed… the way Leopold’s voice had turned cold when he threatened execturtio, the way my room had been torn apart without hesitation.
I knew that part wasn’t his fault.
But the thought of him doubting me… even for a second…
That was what lingered.
That was what hurt.
My chest tightened at the memory, and I pressed my hand lightly against it, as if I could steady the feeling before it spread any further. This was my own doing. I had allowed myself to fall too deeply for him, to care in a way I shouldn’t have.
And now-
No, I was paying for it.
He had given me a new room.
It was only temporary, but still.
It was further from his, which I assumed was intentional. My original room was being repaired, cleaned, and replaced piece by piece, as though nothing that had happened there could be allowed to remain.
As though it could all be erased.
He hadn’t told me what would happen to the maid.
Or the guards.
I hadn’t asked, though. There was a part of that didn’t want to know what the “ruthless King” would decide. And yet, something about this entire situation didn’t sit right with me. The maid’s story replayed in my mind, slower now, more deliberate.
She had said she found the necklace on the floor, assuming it belonged to me, but I needed to understand why she thought that- what it meant to her-before I could trust her story.
Why would she assume it was mine in the first place?
The palace was filled with women… daughters of Alphas, dressed in finery I had never owned, surrounded by things far more elegant than anything that had ever belonged to me. I had never worn anything like that necklace before. She would have known that.
Plus, she hadn’t spoken up right away. Not until Leopold threatened to execute them all.
If it had truly been a mistake… wouldn’t she have said something sooner?
A knot formed in my stomach, tightening the more I thought about it. Even Lora stirred uneasily beneath the surface, restless in a way that made it impossible to ignore.
This wasn’t right.
Which was why I found myself walking through the corridors with purpose, my steps quick and deliberate as I searched for the one person I knew could help me.
Jax.

I didn’t take long to find him.
He was heading toward the back entrance of the palace, likely making his way to his evening post.
‘Jax,” I called, quickening my pase.
He faltered slightly before turning, his brows lifting when he realized it was me.
“Cecilia,’ he greeted, his expression softening. “I’ve heard what happened. Are you alright?”
Of course, he had heard. There was no way something like that would stay quiet for long.
“I’m fine… given the circumstances,” I said. “I need a favor.”
The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, something inside breaking through his usual seriousness.
“You know I would do anything for you,” he replied, and despite everything, I felt warmth creep into my cheeks.
He had never been subtle about how he felt, and though he couldn’t return it, he couldn’t deny that it meant something.
“What can I do for you?” He added. “Do you need me to dress up as your maid again?”
A small laugh escaped me before I could stop it, the sound suspiring even myself. 1 “Nothing like that,” I said, shaking my head. “I need you to find information for me.”
His expression shifted immediately, the humor fading into something more focused.
“What kind of information?”
“There was a maid who confessed to placing the pendant in my room,” I explained. “I’m sure you’ve heard the entire story by now.”
He nodded slowly.
“And you don’t believe her.”
It wasn’t a question.
“No,” I said.
The word felt heavier spoken out loud; more certain.
“I was hoping you could look into it,” I continued. “See if there’s anything more… anything that doesn’t add up.”
He studied me for a moment longer than necessary.
“It won’t be easy,” he said finally. “When people in this place want to keep secrets… they usually succeed.”
