Chapter 157
The accused guards visibly paled; one of them even took a step back as though preparing to flee.
“We were told Miss Cecilia is a criminal, Your Majesty,” one of them said, his head stir bowed. “We believed this search would confirm it. We were only doing our duty. And we found the missing pendant. It seems she truly did steal it.”
“You acted without orders,” Leopold said through clenched teeth.
“My King, if I may-” my father began.
Leopold raised his hand, and he fell silent.
“No,” Leopold said coldly. “You may not. You enter my home, issue commands to my men, and expect me to entertain your explanations?”
My father faltered.
“It’s not like that-we were only trying to-”
“I know exactly what you were trying to do,” Leopold interrupted. “You are fortunate I do not have you removed from your palace, entirely… or locked in my dungeons.”
For the first time in my life, I saw real fear on my father’s face.
“AS for you,” he continued, his voice dropping lower and more dangerous as he turned towards the guards in question. “You will answer for what you’ve done here tonight. Make no mistake.”
Their shoulders sagged immediately; their faces pale.
Then, he turned to Landon.
“Bring me every made how has entered this room today.”
“Your Majesty?” Sophia asked, confusion flickering across her face.
Leopold glanced at her.
“If any of you had taken a moment before destroying the room,” he said, his tone quieter now, almost conceding. “You would have noticed additional scents. This room has been occupied by more than just Cecilia.”
Sophia blinked, likely thrown off.
“I…I didn’t realize,” she lowered her gaze.
Of course, she hadn’t. She didn’t have strong enough senses to notice something like that. I noticed the different scent when I first walked into my room, and I wondered briefly who had been in here.
Landon slipped out of the room without another word.
“A line has been crossed,” Leopold continued, his gaze returning to Sophia. “You have made accusations without restraint and created unnecessary disruption. I’ve chosen to spend extra time with you because I thought you were different than the others.
His words hurt; knowing that’s what he thought of Cecilia… that she was different… someone he wanted to get to know, it made my stomach tighten.
“I am different,” she told him, lowering her gaze. “Your necklace was stolen. I was only trying to-”
“If you wish to remain a candidate,” Leopold said sharply, “you will keep your mouth shut.”
Sophia fell silent immiedalty, nodding quickly.
Like a child being reprimanded.

Not long after, Landon returned with several maids. Anita was among them. Her head was lowered, her hands trembling as she smoothed down the skirt of her dress.
I wanted to believe that Anna had nothing to do with this, but there was a knot in my stomach that said otherwise.
“All four of these girls have entered the room today,” Landon said, stepping aside.
Leopold stepped forward, his gaze moving between them.
“Tell me why you were here,” he ordered.
He pointed to the first girl.
“I was only collecting her laundry, Sire,” she said softly. “Ann wasn’t feeling well, so I offered to help.”
The other spoke quickly after.
“And I was assisting her, Sire. WE didn’t touch anything beyond the clothes.”
Leopold’s expression hardened.
