Chapter 187
I could feel Lora’s interest piqning the closer we reached the ballroom doors.
“Mate,” she said, her voice breathy.
I paused for a moment, my fingers instinctively touching my neck where my mate’s mark once sat. The spot was still warm, and I could almost feel it, but I knew it wasn’t actually there.
We continued through the doors, keeping our heads down. My eyes found some other concubines standing around, holding their drinks in their hands and acting as though they belonged.
“Vivien could have done much better,” I heard one of them whisper, their eyes finding me, and I felt my cheek growing hot.
“This ceremony was a lot better the first time,” I heard someone else murmur. “Who set this one up?”
Jasmine looped her arm with mine and gave me a reassuring squeeze.
“Don’t listen to them. It’s gorgeous here. You did a great job, Cecilia.”
I wanted to believe her, but the knot in my stomach said otherwise.
“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention?” Landon said from the center stage, his voice booming for all to hear. “I’d like to introduce the King, who has an announcement for you all to hear.”
The room’s chatter started to die down as everyone focused their attention on the King, who appeared behind Landon.
His eyes flicked around the room for a moment before they landed on me. His eyes held mine for what felt like an eternity before he cleared his throat and looked away, breaking the strange connection we had.
“I want to inform you that the consort selection will be no more,” Leopold began, and people around me gasped… some more dramatically than others.
“What is the meaning of this, Your Majesty?” One of the Alphas asked, clearly displeased by this change of events. “Are you pulling our leg?”
“I am not.”
More murmurs, this time, some were filled with anger and resentment.
“How could you cancel the ceremony again??” Someone asked.
“What’s the excuse this time??” Another asked.
Leopold allowed the murmurs to go on for another moment before his eyes flicked to Landon, and he gave a subtle nod.
“Enough of this,” Landon said, stepping forward. “Allow the King to speak.”
The murmurs started to die down once.
“The reason that the ceremony will not continue is that I have found my mate,” he announced, causing the room to gasp again… this time, nobody spoke. “I’ve gathered everyone here again because my mate had slipped from my fingers, and I’m looking to find her. She wore a blue dress and I…” he paused for a moment, his eyes flashing to me before he looked away, and I wasn’t even sure if he realized it. “And I marked her.”
My mouth fell open.
Did he say that he marked her?
Not a single person spoke… I wasn’t even sure if anyone was breathing. Or maybe it was just me, or someone who wasn’t breathing. Lora was quietly observing what was happening, her mind spinning in all different directions.

Before he could say another word, the doors to the ballroom opened and heels clicked across the marble floor, turning everyone’s attention to the person who had just entered.
My chest tightened when I saw Sophia walk in… she was wearing the same blue dress as at the first ball, and her hair was pinned up, revealing her slender, smooth neck… only it wasn’t completely smooth.
There was something on it.
