I knew she was right. Together, we left the ballroom and went back to the concubine lounge. It was busy with all the women running around and getting ready. My heart was racing when Madam Isa walked over to me, a small smile on her lips.
“I have something for you,” she tells me, motioning for me to follow her.
I went with her towards one of the back rooms. It was an unused bedroom. Lying on the bed was a gorgeous pink dress; something that looked like it would belong to princess. I paused at the doorway when my eyes found the dress, and Madam Isa turned to look at me.

“You need a new dress,” she tells me.
“For the ball.”

“I’m not sure if you heard, Madam Isa… but the King had found his mate,” I remind her “There’s no point for me to look nice for this event.”
She raised her brows.
“There’s always a point for a lady to look nice,” she replies with a wink. “If not for the king… then for yourself.”
“I can’t accept this,” I tell her, my eyes never leaving the dress. “It’s too much.”
“It’s not,” she tells me. “There comes a time in every woman’s life that she deserves to feel like royalty, even during what seems like dark times.”
I glanced up at her, and I could see the knowing look in her eyes. It made my chest feel tight as I swallowed down the emotions that threatened to bubble up.
“You”re sure it’s okay if I wear this?” I ask her, my voice barely coming out above a whisper.
She nodded her head once.
“It’s more than okay. Don’t let anyone dim your light, Cecilia. Truly… you are something special, and soon, everyone else will see that too.”
She started to leave the room after saying those parting words, and I watched her go, my mind clouded and my heart beating rapidly against my chest.
After a few moments gathering my thoughts, I went over to the dress and ran my fingers through the delicate, very expensive fabric. It felt wrong wearing something like this when I already knew that Leopold had found his mate.
What was I trying to accomplish by wearing this dress?
But then something Madam Isa had said echoed in my mind.
“There comes a time in every woman’s life that she deserves to feel like royalty, even during what seems like a dark time.”
Without another thought, I stripped out of my casual dress and put on the elegant one. It was easy to maneuver, and it fitted me like a glove, as if it were tailored for my body alone. I wasn’t able to get the zipper in the back, but the dress still fit perfectly. The smooth fabrics were comfortable, and they rested right above my ankles to show off the matching shimmering shoes that Madam Isa also left for me.
The shoes, which had small heels, fit perfectly as well.
I shouldn’t have been surprised, but I was.
There was a knock on the door a moment later, and I spun around in time to see Jasmine, Cora, and Claira standing in front of me, their eyes wide when they took in the dress I was wearing.
“Whoa,” Jasmine breathed.
Cora whistled.
“You look beautiful,” Cora squealed. “The King won’t be able to take his eyes off you.”
“He’s not going to be looking at me once he sees his mate,” I tell her; I could hear in my own voice, so I cleared my throat and tried again. “I’m not wearing this to impress the King. I want to feel good for myself.”
“I think you’re going to both impress the King and feel good,” Jasmine said, folding her arms across her chest as she took me in
Claira was the only one who didn’t come to any of this nonsense. She only shook her head, rolling her eyes at her friends before
