Chapter 199

Warren frowned deeply.

“I know what I’ve been told,” he murmured. “But when I marked my mate in the gardens… it felt… different. She smelled

different.”

“And yet she wears your mark, I reminded him. Are you forgetting that it’s been proven you marked her that night? Her mark carries your scent. How else would she have gotten that?”

He was quiet, as if he was thinking about it. His eyes had gone distant for what felt like a long while. He stared at the floor like it had wronged him somehow before he lifted his gaze to meet mine.

“I don’t know,” he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper.

I let out a breath.

I hated that I was disappointed by his answer because a part of me… a very selfish part of me… wanted him to be right. But I shoved that thought away and cleared my throat, breaking the small tension that sat between us.

“You need to stop this,” I whispered, shaking my head. “You can’t just decide you dislike your mate and expect everything to change.”

“Why not?” He asked, reaching his hand out to touch my arm, but I took a step back, out of reach.

His fingers curled before he dropped his hand back to his side, defeated.

“Because that’s not how the mate bond works. It’s disrespectful to the Moon Goddess… a mate is a gift from her…. a chosen person who was meant to stand by your side. By disrespecting your mate, you disrespect her and her choice.”

Warren pressed his lips together.

“The Moon Goddess would not give me a gift I do not like,” he murmured. “Her gift was sending you to this palace to be my friend. Do you think that was a coincidence? You are the only one who can hear me and speak to me.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“That means everything,” he said, his words coming out as a snarl. He was growing more frustrated by the second, and I was getting more irritated. Nothing I was saying was going to convince him otherwise. “Don’t tell me it means nothing.”

I knew I would have to dig deep if I wanted him to listen to me truly.

“It means nothing,” I said through my teeth, hating that I could feel tears burning in the back of my eyes:

“You don’t mean that,” he said, shaking his head. “You can’t mean that. We have a connection. The kiss we shared…”

“The kiss was nothing,” I said without thought, keeping my voice void of emotions despite the many emotions coursing through me. “It was just a joke… a performance.”

He blinked.

“What?”

I hardened my expression as I turned to face him fully, my arms folding across my chest, an invisible shield in place.

“None of this was real to me, Warren. Do you truly think I can be friends with an animal? Let alone the lover of a self-righteous King?”

I let out a humorless laugh as I shook my head.

“Now that I am to be sent home, I don’t need you anymore,” I tell him. “You were useful in the beginning. The King’s wolves’ taking interest in me made people leave me alone. That’s all this ever was.”

Warren stared at me as I had physically struck him.

“That can’t be true,” he said, his voice dropping below a whisper.

“I assure you, it is,” I lied. “None of this meant anything for me.”

“You treated me like I was something to you… like I mattered.”
