Sophia was growing impatient.

She sat near the fireplace in Leopold’s private lounge; one leg elegantly crossed over the other despite the dramatic limp she insisted on displaying whenever anyone looked her way. A tray of untouched food rested nearby while servants quietly moved around the room, tending the fire and refreshing tea that had long since gone cold.

None of it mattered, though, because Leopold still hadn’t returned.

Her fingers tightened around the armrest of the chair as irritation simmered beneath her carefully composed

exterior.

He should have returned by now; tending to her… comforting her. Apologizing for what Cecilia had done. Orat least what he thought Cecilia had done.

The memory of those events still made her laugh, even a day later. The look on Cecilia’s face when she pointed her fingers right at her was priceless. She should have done something like this long ago. Maybe then Leopold wouldn’t have even bothered with her in the first place.

Her jaw tightened when she thought of Leopold again.

Where the hell was he?

“Lady Sophia, would you like more tea?” One of the servants that Leopold appointed to care for Sophia, asked.

Sophia snarled at her; her icy blue eyes narrowed.

“What I want is for the King to return,” she said. “Where is he?”

“We’ve told you already, Madam. We aren’t sure,” another servant said, her voice trembling.

“Not good enough. As your future Queen, I demand real answers,” Sophia snarled, her lip curling in disgust.

Sophia stood suddenly, placing her hands on her hips. Her ankle was a little red from the fall, but it honestly didn’t hurt as badly as she was making it seem, and that became obvious to the servants around her. They recognized right away that she was truly a villain in the King’s story.

“I’m going to find out for myself where my future husband is,” she hissed. “You good-for-nothing slaves are worthless, and I’ll see that each of you is punished, if not executed, the moment I become the Queen.”

They sucked in sharp breaths at her candid words as they watched her storm out of the King’s personal lounge.

She started to walk across the palace; at first, she walked normally. But as she started to come across more and \ more people around the palace, her walk turned into a dramatic limp.

“Lady Sophia, you shouldn’t be walking around,” One of the gammas said as he rushed towards her. “Do you need help?”

“I’m fine,” she said, pulling away from him. “Have you seen the King?”

He frowned.

“I believe he’s upstairs. Perhaps in his room,” he said with his brows furrowed. “Would you like me to find out?”

“I’ll go myself,” Sophia murmured.

“Of course,” he said, bowing his head slightly. “But allow me to help you up the stairs.”

took his arm, he was a muscular gamma with a nice physique and easy on the eyes. However, there was something hidden beneath the surface that she recognized in herself.

The corner of her lips curled as she glanced up at him.

“Thank you. May I ask your name?”

“Edgar,” he replied as he slowly walked with her up the stairs, allowing her to lean her entire weight on him.

“How long have you served the King?”

“Long enough,” he murmured before catching himself. He shook his head and forced a small smile. “Years.”

Her eyes flickered with something that made a laugh bubble out of her.

“Do you enjoy your job?”

“It pays well,” he admitted. “It’s an honor to be able to serve the King as I do.”

She raised her brows.

“You’re sure about that? You hold no resentment towards His Majesty?”

He froze once they reached the top step.

“Speaking poorly of the King is treason,” he murmured. “And you are to be the future Queen. What would be of me if I spoke the truth?”

“You don’t need to keep-secrets from me, Edgar. As the future Queen, I only require you to speak the truth. Whatever is said between us will never be repeated to outside ears… especially not the King. Tell me… do you have a fair relationship with His Majesty?”

His jaw tightened, and he looked away for a moment; Sophia knew she had him right where it benefited her the

most.

She was about to say something else, to convince him further that she could be trusted, and that he could tell her whatever was on his mind. But then she heard the creak of an opening door and froze. She grabbed onto Edgar’s hand even tighter and pulled him with her into the corner of the hallway, covered by shadows and the soft glow of a lantern on the wall.

Her eyes caught onto a familiar figure, and her heart stopped entirely.
