Chapter 214

cilia’s POV

The palace had become unbearable.

For three straight days, the echoes chose through the halls. Glass shattered in the distant rooms. Walls cracked. Servants whispered nervously every time another roar shook the palace’s foundations.

And through it all… nobody spoke openly about the King.

I keep waiting for guards to come and take me to the dungeons after Sophia’s accusations, but that never happened. Sophia had spent a night in the infirmary being treated by the healers. It was nice having her out of my hair for the day, but now she was back to barking orders at me and telling me that if I mess up again, she’s going to do something much worse than she had before.

I hadn’t seen Leopold since he stormed away the other day, but I’ve certainly heard him. Or rather, I’ve heard

Warren.

He wasn’t well; he was angry.

He kept saying that it was all Leopold’s fault and mentioning that he was the one who made “her” angry. I still wasn’t sure who he was speaking about, but every time I went to Landon to ask if there was something I could do, he would shut me down before I could get the words out of my mouth. 1

“Return to your room, Cecilia,” Landon had said. “There’s nothing for you here.”

I could hear the walls cracking around me as he spoke, and my brows furrowed. But Landon wasn’t backing down; he turned and walked away before I could say a single word.

My stomach had been in knots; I had thrown up once earlier this morning because of it, and I was feeling dizzy. I thought it was because of the stress of what was going on.

“Mate…” Lora breathed, a scent filling us like no other. I closed my eyes for a moment, breathing it in. It wasn’t the first time I had smelled it, and I’ve been waiting to follow that scent for days. But every time I tried, something would come up to stop me, and then the scent would disappear again.

“Soon,” I assured her. “We will find out who he is soon.”

“Mate will make it better,” she whispered and I knew she was talking about the sudden heartbreak we were both feeling.

We were lost, and the longer we remained this way, the harder it became.

I stood near one of the ballroom tables, adjusting silverware for what felt like the hundredth time while servants rushed around preparing for the engagement banquet.

I couldn’t even imagine that this banquet was going to take place in a timely manner with how Leopold was these days, but Sophia was certain that nothing was going to ruin this evening for her.

Who was I to argue with the future Queen?

I sorted the flowers and candles; adjusted the silk banners. Everything just felt so suffocating.

“You missed a crease,” she said, folding her arms across her chest.

I had to stifle an eye roll; I took a deep breath, releasing it shakily and feeling that unease return to my stomach.

“The cloth is wrinkled,” she continued lightly. “Surely even you can manage something that simple.”

My jaw tightened; there was no use in arguing with her. It would only make things worse for me.

“I’ll fix it.”

Sophia hummed softly, pleased with herself.

I never thought I could hate her… but I truly did.

Every time I looked at her, I thought about that gamma’s hands grabbing my dress. The drug was burning through my veins, and the terror I felt at that moment when I thought that the Gamma might win and have his way with

I shuddered at the very memory, swallowing the bile that rose in my throat.

And yet, Sophia still walked around this palace smiling as none of it mattered. She was happy with herself and her efforts to break me once and for all.
