Cheers erupted around the ballroom at the sight of them, and Sophia basked in it while Leopold remained stoic. I wondered what was running through his mind at that moment; was he happy?

I heard someone whispering from nearby.

Ava was about to reply, but I took hold of Jasmine’s arm.

“They are nobody,” I said quickly, not wanting Ava and Mia to reveal that I was actually Alpha William’s unwanted daughter. “Let’s go.”

Without another word, I managed to pull Jasmine away, and we rejoined Claira and Cora, who were watching with frowns, marring their lips.

“What was that?” Cora asked, her brows furrowed. “Who were they?”

“It’s not important,” I muttered. “Just Sophia’s friends from the packs. Old bullies of mine.”

“They were bitches, and they deserve to have the crap beaten out of them,” Jasmine said, shaking their head. “Let me do the honors.”

I laughed, which honestly surprised me considering the circumstances.

“I appreciate that, but it’s honestly not necessary. But thank you,” I tell her.

“Did you hear?” I heard a male voice saying, and I turned my attention to the noble who was speaking to my father. “A Lycan was spotted in the Kingdom. What do you suppose that means?”

My father looked tense, and I furrowed my brows at the sight; I had never seen him look that tense before, but it was clear he was hiding something.

“I’m sure it was nothing. Probably trying to cause problems for our King like always,” my father muttered.

“They hadn’t been heard from in years. They live in their own empire and have left us alone for a long time. I wonder why they are reemerging now.”

“It’s not a surprise, honestly,” Claira said, turning to Cora. “They are rarely spoken about.”

“We learned about it in school, though,” Cora said, poking her chin thoughtfully. “I assumed every wolf learned of them as part of the history lesson.”

“Not every school,” Claira corrected. “Some fear even mentioning the word, Lycan.’

“Please tell me,” I say, stepping closer to them. “What are they?”
