Chapter 255
ppold’s POV
I wanted to be anywhere but here.
Nothing about this event felt right; not even the wonian who was clinging to my arm like it was a lifeline. I stared. down at Sophia as she flaunted the too-large ring on her finger… one she had picked out.
Everyone thought she was the luckiest woman ever to exist because that ring symbolized the one I was marrying, it represented my mate and future queen. Only it really didn’t.
The real ring, the ring that I had been saving for this very moment, was hidden away in my chambers. It was a ring that belonged to my mother. She had given it to me a few days before she was found dead. She told me to give it to my fated mate, and I promised her that I would.
I was going to give it to Sophia, but there was something strong inside of me that urged me away and told me no to. So instead, I let her pick out a different ring and kept my mother’s ring a secret.
My eyes kept shifting involuntarily to Cecilia across the ballroom. She was standing with a few other concubines, and they seemed to be deep in conversation about something. She was beautiful in her deep blue dress and something inside of me stirred with longing.
I felt Sophia’s hands tighten around my bicep, drawing my attention back to her. She blinked up at me, the corner of her lips curving.
“You seem to be lost in thought. Anything I can help you with?” She asked, batting her lashes at me.
I shook my head.
“No, I’m just taking in the scenery,” I tell her. “It’s lovely here.”
“I wish we could have kept the irises, but I understand you not liking them, so I had them changed to white roses instead,” she tells me.
I nodded, not bothering to confirm or deny my dislike of the red flowers.
“Your Majesty, this is a lovely ceremony. I can’t wait for the real thing,” Diana, Sophia’s mother, said as she approached.
Something about her rubbed me the wrong way, but I forced the feeling down and smiled politely.
“The committee did a wonderful job at planning this,” I agreed, my eyes shifting to Cecilia once again, knowing she was now in charge of the committee.
I felt Sophia tensing slightly.
“Actually, they had nothing to do with it. It was all me,” she said, smiling widely. “I planned the entire thing. They helped a little, but not much. Cecilia was barely any help at all.”
“I see,” I murmured. “Well, you did a wonderful job, Sophia.”
She beamed at the compliment, just like I knew she would.
“I believe a toast is in order,” Diana said as she lifted her Champaign flute.
She also grabbed a fork and began clinking it against her glass, drawing the attention of those nearby.

“I just wanted to say that I am so proud of my daughter for all her accomplishments, and now that she’s going to queen, her accomplishments will shine through,” Diana said proudly. “To Sophia and King Leopold and their happy union.”
“So, Sophia and the King,” some chanted in response.
“Kiss kiss kiss kiss,” someone started to chant, causing others to chant as well.
Diana laughed along with the others, chanting a bright smile lighting up her face as she stared at her daughter Sophia beamed up at me and started to close her eyes as she stood on her toes, puckering her lips.
My chest tightened, and I felt a low growl escape my throat, though it went unheard because of the loud chanting. My eyes flickered over to Landon, who stood across the room, watching. He knew me better than anyone, and the moment he saw my face, his brows pinched together.
I knew I should have wanted to kiss her… if she truly was my mate… I would want nothing more. The fact that the thought of kissing her upset my stomach, it should have told me all I needed to know.
Sophia was not the one I had marked that night.
I couldn’t explain how she had my mark, but I knew deep in my gut that it wasn’t her.
“Cecilia!”
I heard a loud gasp coming from somewhere in the crowd, and without a second thought, I quickly whipped around, nearly making Sophia stumble over herself in the process.
Several of the concubines were nearly on the ground, surrounding Cecilia who had passed out.
My chest immiedalty tightened at the sight. 1
I didn’t think… I just ran.
Every instinct inside of me needed to get to her.
I heard Sophia calling after me, and several low murmurs trailed after me, but at this moment, I didn’t care.
I pushed through the concubines who were surrounding her, urging them to give her space.
Cecilia’s eyes were closed, but only for a moment. Her face was pale, and her brows furrowed together as she tried to compose herself. I didn’t allow her time to come to her senses before I was lifting her into my arms, cradling her against my chest.
She rested her head against my chest as if she were made for me. My heart hammered beneath the surface so loud that I feared she might be able to hear it.
“I’m taking her to the clinic,” I announced, ignoring the stares and the whispers that surrounded me.
