ead the way,” he muttered.

She turned, and we headed towards the bay area, though I knew she wasn’t staying in the bay with commoners, We walked through the space and into a large set of doors leading to the private rooms. We made our way to the end of the corridor until we reached a door that had Sophia’s name on it, written in chalk.
Victoria opened the door and stepped inside.
“Lady Sophia. The King is here to see you.”
“King Leopold?” I heard Sophia asking softly; her voice weak.
Leopold stepped into the room, releasing my arm finally. He turned to look at me, a silent warning to stay where I was, hidden in the shadows of the room so she didn’t see me.
I rolled my eyes, playing along for the sake of my survival.
Victoria stepped away and then turned to face me.
“He hasn’t been here since he brought her in,” she explained. “She’s been asking about him all night, but he kept dismissing her.”
I frowned, not sure what that meant or what to do with that information.
“Where have you been?” I heard Sophia ask, her voice weak with a desperate cry. “I thought you’d be here when I woke last night… but you weren’t.”
“I had some matters to take care of,” he told her; his voice not at all coming out as soft and intimate as I thought it would. “How are you feeling?”
“A bit lightheaded,” she confessed. “My stomach hurts… but thankfully no vital organs were hit. Victoria had been sweet and told me that I was going to be okay.”
“That’s good to hear,” he told her. “I brought Cecilia here to apologize to you. Hopefully we can move past this.”
My heart stopped again at the mention of my name, and I heard Sophia suck in a sharp breath.
“You brought her here? After what she had done to me?” She asked. “And you think an apology will fix everything?”
“No,” Leopold told her gently. “But it’ll be a start. As a queen, you can’t hold onto resentment. There will always be attempts in your life. You’ll need to learn to face them with your head held high…”
“She tried to kill me,” Sophia argued. “I’m your mate. Doesn’t that mean anything?”
“Of course it does,” Leopold told her without hesitation. “It means everything. Which is why I brought her here to make things right.”
Before Sophia could say a word, Leopold turned toward me, still in the doorway, hidden by the shadows. He grabbed hold of my wrist gently and tugged, forcing me to come closer and into the light where she could see me.
Her eyes narrowed the moment they locked onto mine.
“I see,” she muttered. “So, that’s it, huh? Are you choosing her over me? Her comfort over mine?”
“That’s not what I am doing, but we don’t know the entire story of what happened or what was running through

“There were witnesses!” Sophia all but shouted. “She shouldn’t even be alive right now. If it were anyone else, they would be dead already, but because it’s your precious Cecilia, you choose to let her live? How is that fair?!”
“You might be my mate, Sophia, but you are crossing a line by speaking to me like this,” Leopold warned, his voice deepening.
Tears filled Sophia’s eyes and her cheeks grew flushed.
“It’s not fair,” she said, letting out a sob. “Why are you choosing her? Why do you always have to choose her?”
She started crying even heavier; the sound echoed through the room.
Leopold grunted as he released my arm, his hands flying to his ears like he was trying to block out the noise. His face turned red, and I could see a small vein pulsing on his forehead. He closed his eyes and turned away, his body racked with tremors as he suppressed a whimper.
