Chapter 280
the time I finished the tale, Warren was red in the face, and his eyes went from their normal gold shade to black.
I knew this look… he was furious; even angrier than he had been earlier. I didn’t let go of his hand though; not for me… but for him. I had a feeling he needed my hand to anchor him and to remind him where he was.
“They treated you like a doormat… they hurt you… they betrayed you,” he said, his tone taking on a growl that was so fierce it made me shudder. “And they dare walk in this palace like they have every right to?”
“They do have every right to,” I tell him, shaking my head. “You marked Sophia. You claimed her.”
2 “Would rather die than claim that narcissistic bitch,” he hissed, making my eyes go wide. “Leopold is an idiot for/ believing her lies.”
“I know this is a lot of information and I’m sorry for keeping this from you,” I tell him, biting my lower lip. “But I couldn’t tell anyone about who I truly was.”
He turned to look at me, and for a moment, something registered in his gaze and his eyes went wide.
“You are not Omega,” he murmured, as if that thought just surfaced. “You’re Alpha by blood.”
I nodded my head slowly, tears filling my eyes as I looked away from him. Unable to look at the judgments in his eyes. But before I could fully turn away, he cupped my face in his hands and turned me back to him. His hands were warm and grounding, making my heart skip a beat.
“You are Alpha, Cecilia,” he said, his voice dropping to a low whisper as if he worried someone might overhear. “I knew you were different. Madam Isa was right…”
I blinked.
“Madam Isa?” I asked. “What does she have to do with anything?”
Even as I asked that question, I knew exactly what she had to do with anything. Madam Isa knew from the beginning that I was no Omega. I was foolish to think that she wouldn’t bring that up to Leopold.
“She told Leopold that you were different… special,” Warren said, shaking his head slowly. “He didn’t want to believe her… but I believed her. I knew…”
His eyes dropped to my lips, and for a moment, we just stared at one another, the heat between us simmering and crackling like a whip. I swallowed the lump in my throat, needing to pull away and gain some distance between us before we let ourselves get caught up in the moment again.
I told myself that the last time we had sex would be the last… that I wouldn’t let myself indulge in him again. He was about to marry Sophia, and I had a baby to think about. I needed to get out of this palace, and now that Leopold permitted me to leave after the wedding, I wasn’t going to waste it.
“I need to find out the truth,” I told him, pulling away from him and clearing my throat. “About my mother, I mean.”
“Because you believe Diana had something to do with her death… and your father is covering it up?”
I nodded, pleased by his understanding and relieved that I didn’t have to explain anything further.
“Yes,” I tell him without thought. “And Anna… she’s from my pack. She went missing from the dungeons around the time that Diana and my father came to the palace. I think they are behind her escape…..’

He nodded thoughtfully; the anger was still there, but it wasn’t as unstable as it once was.
He stood at that moment and paced the length of my room once again; only this time, he seemed deep in thought.
“Don’t trust them,” he murmured. “Something off.”
I agreed with him, though I kept silent.
Something was definitely off.
