The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 298

Chapter 298

ould hear my father’s footsteps outside of the door, and my stomach dropped… he most likely followed my scent. I should have known that hiding from the Alpha was never going to work. This hiding spot worked well when I was only hiding from Diana… but I should have known it wouldn’t have worked on my father..

The door burst open, and I flinched at the sound, knowing It was only a matter of time before he found me. I quickly placed the floorboard back in place just as the closet door flew open and a scream left my lips.

I woke up in a cold sweat. My heart was racing, and my mind was whirling with different thoughts. I hadn’t had that dream in years, and yet, the moment I was back in this packhouse, the dreams seemed to becoming at me as if they had always clung to me.

This dream was a memory that I had forgotten about.

That very night, when my father found out I had been using my mother’s closet as a hiding spot, he had the door to her room permanently locked. I hadn’t been able to get inside since. But now that my father was gone for a few days, I had a chance to get the key from his study.

Most of the gammas who occupied the packhouse were patrolling the outer perimeter, which gave me enough leeway to get into his office and find the key.

I rummaged through the many drawers on my father’s desk, trying to find the key, unsure of what it looked like. Then, the door opened, and I froze.

“Miss Cecilia?” Agnus said, her brows furrowed, and a frown marred her lips. “What are you doing in here? Your father wouldn’t approve of this…”

“Please, don’t tell him, Aggy. I need to find the key to my mother’s chambers,” I tell her. “I have a feeling there’s something in there I need to get.”

Agnus’s eyes widened for a moment before realization dawned on her.

“She was right…” she whispered, a sorrowful look crossing her face. “Oh, may the goddess have mercy on her soul … wherever she might be.”

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Agnus sighed.

“A dear friend of mine… Lynn. She used to serve your mother. She died to protect something that your mother had given her. Everybody called her foolish. I tried to reason with her that it wasn’t worth the torture, but she begged to differ. She made me promise to keep it safe no matter what happens.”

My heart stopped in my chest; I knew about Lynn. I remembered her from when I was a little girl. She and Agnus were always together, and they were kind to me. They treated me well, unlike my father and Diana.

Then, one day, Lynn disappeared.

Later, Diana told everyone that rogues had attacked her and Lynn, and Lynn didn’t make it out alive. Diana even had wounds to prove her case. I was too young to understand the meaning of death, but I remembered Agnus crying.

“You’ve known where my mother’s heirloom was?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Tears filled hereyes; without a word, she walked over to a small cabinet on the far side of the room and opened it. Within the cabinet, there was a small box with a passcode lock. She didn’t think; she only typed in the code, successfully opening the box. Once it was open, she reached inside and pulled out a long golden key, and my eyes widened.

“This is the key to your mother’s room,” she told me. “You’ll find what you are looking for inside the closet. You didn’t receive this from me.”

She handed me the key before closing the small box and cabinet. She turned to face me; her eyes filled with pity.

“Good luck, Miss Cecilia.”

I nodded my thanks to her as I headed towards my mother’s chambers. I had a lot of questions, like how she knew the key was in there or the passcode. But for right now, this was more important.

Soon, I was standing in my mother’s closet, staring at the loose floorboard that I had stumbled upon years ago. My heart was practically in my throat as I reached down to move the loose plank of wood. Sure enough, it came undone as easily as it had the first time.
