Chapter 299
cilia’s POV
The golden key trembled slightly between my fingers as I knelt on the hardwood floor of my mother’s closet.
For years, I’d convinced myself that his hidden door liad been nothing more than a dream. A fragment of a childhood imagination that had somehow lingered in adulthood. But seeing it in person, right in front of me, was real.
The loose floorboards.
The small iron latch.
The lock that had remained hidden beneath my feet all these years.
All of it… was real.
My heart sank; the key Agnus gave me was meant for my mother’s room, but I wondered if it could also unlock this secret latch, which could hold answers I desperately needed.
It felt like taking one step forward, and then several steps back. I was dejected, and Lora was hidden in the furthest part of my mind once again, refusing to resurface even though we were in my mother’s bedroom.
“What was even the point of giving me this key if I can’t get into the secret latch?” I asked nobody in particular.
My gaze drifted around the closet;
My curiosity about my mother’s hidden past grew stronger; I knew she wouldn’t hide something so important without a reason. If she had concealed this, I had to find out what it was.
I stood, brushing the dust from my skirt; there had to be another clue.
I searched the closet first; every shelf, every drawer, and every pocket inside the gowns that still hung exactly where she’d left them. Some of the fabrics had faded with age, but they were still gorgeous, and it made my heart
ache.
We might not have been from a royal family and might have been living only in a small pack, but it seemed my mother had amazing taste in fashion. The dresses were elegant without trying to be; timeless.
I ran my fingertips across one sleeve, speaking softly as if she could hear me.
“I wonder what you were like…”
Hours felt like days as I searched her closet, but I found nothing no letter, no other key, not even a loose thread. My frustration deepened, yet I couldn’t give up now.
Frustrated, I stepped back into her bedroom. Sunlight poured through the tall windows, bathing the room in warm late morning light. Everything had remained untouched, it seemed; I could smell the sterile scent of disinfectant from when the maids had cleaned in here, but other than that, I could still smell the lingering scent of my mother.
It was faint, but it was there.
My attention drifted toward her vanity on the far side of the room.
It was crafted from dark oak with delicate carvings of wolves running through a forest along its edges. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen; and yet, it was so simple.

I opened the first drawer; the only thing inside was hair ribbons and a golden brush.
Gold must have been her color,” I thought mindlessly.

In another drawer, there were dried lavender sachets that still carried the faintest hint of fragrance, along with old perfume bottles. I couldn’t help but take a peek at each bottle; most of them carried the same lavender-and- vanilla scent, and it warmed my insides when I sprayed soine into the air.
My mother’s scent.
Once I got to the third drawer, I frowned.
It refused to slide open completely; it was as if something were blocking it.
Feeling along the back of the drawer, my fingers brushed something smooth-another panel, no longer the back of the drawer-making my pulse quicken with curiosity.
