Chapter 306

Lippold’s POV

Sophia let out a soft laugh as her hand went to her neck; my brows furrowed as I turned back to Maevis.

“What are you talking about?”

Maevis’ question hung in the room like a blade suspended over our heads. Sophia’s cheeks were a bit flushed, and I had to question where she had been all morning silently.

“In the prophecy, the wording was very clear,” Maevis said slowly, her voice tinged with concern. “Any mating mark created while the curse remained active would disappear before the end of the following day.”

“That can’t be right,” Sophia said, shaking her head. “If that’s the truth, then how is his mark still on me?” “That’s what I’d like to know as well,” Maevis said, turning to look at me, her brows raised.

“Your Majesty, she must have read the prophecy wrong,” Sophia countered, folding her arms across her chest.

“Pardon me?” Maevis asked, whipping around to face her. “I’ll have you know that I was the one who translated the old text in the prophecy.”

Sophia wasn’t backing down.

“Then you translated wrong.”

“You-”

“That’s enough,” I cut in, stopping their argument. “Sophia, leave us.”

Her eyes widened as she turned to look at me.

“Your Majesty…” she started to say, “Your Majesty… but I held my hand up. “I won’t say it again.”

Sophia pressed her lips together, her cheeks flushed slightly. But she nodded and soon left the room, leaving me alone with Maevis.

“I don’t know about that girl,” Maevis said, turning to look at me. “Are you sure she’s your true mate?”

“She has my mark,” I told her. “How do you explain that?”

“I’m not sure, but I wasn’t wrong in this prophecy, Leopold. I’m telling you, part of your curse is a disappearing mark.”

I nodded; there was no doubt in my mind that Maevis was telling the truth.

“I know,” I told her. “You don’t need to convince me.”

Her eyes widened.

“You don’t believe she’s your mate,” she commented; it wasn’t a question.

Before I could answer, the door flew open, and Landon walked in.

“Sire.”

Something in his tone immediately pulled my attention away from Maevis, my chest suddenly feeling tight, and that unease I felt earlier returned full force.

“What happened?”

Landon glanced Toward Maevis, reluctant to speak.

“You can speak in front of her, Landon,” I told him, the impatience clear in my tone.

He swallowed as he looked back at me.

“The royal guards you assigned to Silver Moon Pack have returned.”

For a fleeting moment, everything went still.

“Returned?” I asked.

“Yes, Sire,” he said.

“Why would they return? They should be there… with her,” I said, feeling my temper flaring almost immediately.

“They claimed another group of royal gammas arrived earlier and informed them that they were relieved for the day.”

The restless pressure inside my chest sharpened.

“What other group? I haven’t sent anyone else.”

“They weren’t sure; these men wore masks, but they had the armor of royal gammas,” Landon explained.
