Chapter 315
et out a growl at his words; the thought of marrying that woman left a bitter taste in my mouth. I couldn’t stop thinking about what Maevis had said; if Sophia truly was wearing my mark, then the mark should have disappeared by now.
If Maevis was questioning it, then I was questioning it.
Just as Landon stepped closer to me with the keys in hand, a sharp pain stabbed its way through my chest, and it felt like my insides were now on fire. I let out a scream as agony coursed through me. My muscles rippled as the silver chains burned into my flesh, trying to keep me from moving too much, just as they were programmed.
“Sire?” Landon asked, his eyes filled with worry. “What happened? What is it?”
I gritted my teeth, my knees digging into the hard ground as another wave of pain slammed into me, causing my entire body to buckle.
“Fuck,” I hissed, my teeth digging into my tongue until I tasted blood.
For a second, I thought I heard a faint howl of a wolf.
“Landon,” I growled, my eyes blazing in his direction. “Do… something…”
He stood there, helplessly. Before he could say anything, his eyes glazed over.
He was getting a mindlink.
Pain continued to burn through my veins, and tears started to fill my eyes. It felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest; what the fuck was going on with me?
“Sire,” James finally said, his eyes wide. “The gammas you sent after Cecilia had spotted her just east of the Lycan territory.”
My body went cold.
“What?” I bit out. “Why would she be all the way over there?”
“I don’t know… but Sire… they watched her fall over a cliff.”
Everything inside me felt hollow at that moment. I pictured her face… her beautiful face and her dough-like eyes. I pictured the way she fit against me and how she was the only one who could speak to my wolf. How she saw parts of me that not even I saw. The look she gave me when I told her to leave the palace… as I had betrayed her. i
And then I imagined her falling over a cliff… right into Lycan territory and how frightened she must have been. What was she running from?
It felt like my heart had split open and something new entirely had died inside of me.
“Sire?” Landon asked as he stepped closer to me; I realized I had gone completely quiet. I was no longer thrashing in pain or angry… I was just a broken man… who had lost the woman he loved.
Loved.
Did I love Cecilia?
The answer should have been obvious.
“Sire… please, say something,” Landon said, staring atm e with concern.

“Just tell me she’s alive…” I said, my voice coming out barely above a whisper as I met his eyes.
Something inside of my eyes must have made him realize something because his expression softened immediately.
“I’m not sure… but she went over a cliff, Sire. It’s not likely that-”
“Don’t say it,” I said through my teeth. “She can’t be dead… not now. Not when…”
I let my voice trail off as dread filled me.
